Long Beach began as one of a series of musical sketches I wrote in 1984 inspired by the geography of British Columbia. The title refers to a place on the west coast of Vancouver Island - a remote, wild, extensive beach which, at least at that time, was relatively untouched by humanity. Although not programmatic in nature, the work does try to capture the wide variety of moods found there, from placid to wild, with often sudden shifts from one to another, as well as the overall sense of awe and other-worldliness I felt being there.
The work was commissioned by the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony through the assistance of the Ontario Arts Council.
