Honours Biology The Honours BSc program in Biology consists of a minimum of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent). The theme of the program emphasizes comparative aspects of biology including structure, function and taxonomy. Students must select at least one credit in each of the two sub-disciplines (Botany and Zoology) during Second or Third Year. 3. With departmental approval a student in the General program may transfer to the Honours program after fulfilling all the Honours requirements up to the time of transfer. Students (except those who have been permitted to proceed in Honours Biology on probation) who must transfer out of the Honours program because of insufficient GPA may re-enter the program provided that by the end of the academic year following transfer to the General program, they have (a) attained an accumulated GPA in Biology of at least 7.00; (b) fulfilled all other Honours program requirements by the time of reinstatement; (c) attained a GPA of not less than 9.00 on a minimum of two and a half Biology credits taken in that year. 4. Honours Biology students in Second, Third, and Fourth Year are expected to attend all Biology Department seminars. 5. Electives must include at least a half credit, other than mathematics, in the Humanities Division and a half credit in the Social Sciences Division course. The program shall include: 1. at least two Mathematics credits at the 300 or 400 level including at least one at the 400 level, 2. at least one Biology credit at the 400 level other than BI490* and BI491, 3. at least one credit in each of Botany and Zoology, as determined by the Department of Biology. For progression into the Third and Fourth Years of the program, and for graduation, the requirements are a minimum cumulative GPA of 7.00 in Biology and Mathematics courses combined, and a minimum cumulative GPA of 4.00 in other courses. 3. Senior Honours students are expected to attend all departmental seminars. 4. The program shall include: 1. at least two Mathematics credits at the 300 or 400 level including at least one at the 400 level. 2. at least one Chemistry credit at the 300 or 400 level other than the required Chemistry courses. The program must include at least credit in curriculum Division A in the General program, except that Mathematics courses may not be used to fulfil this requirement. The program shall include no more than 7 junior credits and must include at least 4 Mathematics credits at the 300 or 400 level including at least 2 at the 400 level. A maximum of 6 credits at the 100 level may be included in the program. First Year Five credits including: 1. PS100* 2. MA100* or MA140* 3. Two of: BI100*; CH100* (or CH110*); PC100* (or PC110*); GL100*; CP104 and one of CP114 or CP116 or CP102 4. One full credit from AN101, AN102, EC120, EC140, PO100*, PO110, PO111, SY100*, GG100*, or a senior credit in any of these disciplines except Physical Geography. 5. One full credit from Archaeology, Classics, History, Literature or Language, Music History or Literature, Philosophy, Religion and Culture. Note: Either 4 or 5 above may be met after First Year. Second Year Admission requirements: GP of 7.00 in PS100* and a GPA of 5.00 in the electives. Five credits including: 1. PS298, PS299 2. At least two from PS209, PS211, or PS228, of which at least one must be completed during Second Year. 3. At least two credits in senior lab courses in Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Physical Geography, or Physics eligible for credit towards a BSc program must be completed by the end of Fourth Year. 6. At least two additional senior credits in Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Mathematics, Physical Geography, or Physics eligible for credit towards a BSc program must be completed by the end of Fourth Year. 7.
