HONOURS PROGRAMS
The primary objective of every Honours program is to develop knowledge, appreciation, and
skills in the student's chosen Honours subject, while at the same time fostering a perspective on
the relation of the Honours subject to other disciplines.

Honours BSc programs emphasize the interrelationships among the natural
sciences, mathematics, and computing, in addition to the intensive study of one or more specific
subjects in this area. Honours BSc programs are available in Biology, Biology And Chemistry,
Biology and Mathematics, Chemistry, Chemistry and Mathematics, Computing and Computer
Electronics, Geography, Mathematics, and Psychology.

Honours BA programs provide concentration in subjects in the humanities,
social sciences, and biology, as well as opportunities for students to become aware of the
relation of their Honours subject(s) to other disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, natural
sciences, and elsewhere. Honours BA programs are available in the following subjects:
 Anthropology

 History
 Archaeology

 Latin
 Biology

 Mathematics
 Classical Studies

 Philosophy
 Economics

 Physical Education
 English Language and Literature

 Political Science
 French

 Psychology
 Geography

 Religion and Culture
 German

 Sociology

Honours students have a wide choice of secondary programs available to
them. It is usually possible to combine two Honours BA subjects into a ``Combined Honours''
program; as noted above, one Honours BA subject is available only in this form. Honours
students in all programs may be eligible for the Administration Option (page 73) which is a
secondary program in administrative studies offered in conjunction with a program in the
humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences. Students in specified Honours programs are also
eligible for the Internship Option (page 73), a work-study program. Finally Honours students
may select a General Major, a Minor, or any other Option (page 75) as a secondary program.

 Regulations for Honours Programs
All students registered in Honours programs offered by the Faculty of Arts and Science are
subject to the following regulations:
 1.
An Honours program must consist of a minimum of 20 full-credit courses (or
equivalent) including at least nine senior credits in the area of specialization or at least six senior
credits in each of two areas of specialization at the Honours level. Individual Departments may
require more than the minimum stated above.
Students may elect to take a combined Honours program (available combinations
are described on pages 76-107). In cases when program descriptions of each of the constituent
parts of a combination stipulates a different number of courses required for the combination, the
      larger total will apply.
 2.
Progression requirements will be based either on GPAs obtained from
courses taken in the preceding year or on cumulative GPAs, as specified in the program
      requirements.
 3.
Students enrolled in an Honours program who have failed to achieve the
standing required for admission to the subsequent year of their program may proceed on
academic probation for a period of 12 months, providing the Honours department recommends
and the Dean approves such action. An Honours student may proceed on probation only once.
The terms of probation will be determined by the Dean and the Chairperson of the Honours
department and will be conveyed to the student by the Registrar's Office and normally include
making up deficiencies of the previous year.
 4.
Students enrolled in Honours programs may not declare substitutions for either their
Honours or optional courses previously attempted.
 5.
Unless other departmental regulations apply, students having failed a course may
proceed in the Honours program, provided that they have the required average. Such a student
must repeat a failed course if it is a required course. If it is not a course required by their
program, they may repeat it or take an additional course; however, the ``F'' grade of a course
not required by their program will be included in the student's GPA. No course may be
      attempted more than twice.
 6.
A student who has failed an Honours course and is required to transfer to the
General program may repeat the failed course but only at the General level.
 7.
At the end of the First Year, students may transfer into an Honours program from
either a General or another Honours program at the discretion of the Department. Thereafter
students may not transfer from either a General or another Honours program unless they have
obtained both a cumulative GPA of 7.00 in the senior courses of their new Honours discipline
as well as a GPA of 7.00 in those senior courses of the new Honours discipline taken in the
previous year. In addition the requirements for progression which pertain to electives must be
met as stipulated in the calendar description of the Honours program. Transferring students are
subject to the following provisions: They may be exempted from First Year Honours level
required courses at the discretion of the Department. In departments where a distinction between
honours and general level courses is maintained, students may count a maximum of two senior
General credits towards their Honours course requirements. They must fulfil all other program
requirements according to the General Regulations of Honours programs and the specific
      requirements of the Honours program.
A Department may, however, require that students complete all courses specified
in the Honours program. All transfers into an Honours program after the end of the First Year
must have the approval of both the Department and the Dean.
 8.
Students must have their total program approved by their Honours Department(s)
by the beginning of each academic year.
 9.
Any exceptions to the Honours regulations require the written approval of both the
Department and the Dean, except that in every case a minimum of 20 credits (or equivalent) is
      required for graduation.
 10.
In order to meet graduation requirements for an Honours degree, students must
receive a GPA of at least 7.00 in courses of their Honours subjects, and a GPA of at least 4.00
in all other courses. The GPAs will be determined by using either cumulative GPAs or the
averages obtained from courses taken in the final year only. Unless otherwise stipulated in the
Honours program description, GPAs based on the results obtained in the final year will be used
      to determine graduation.
 11.
Some departments require comprehensive examinations of their Honours students.
These examinations, which may be partly oral and partly written, are given at the end of the
Fourth Year and cover broad aspects of the student's Honours program. These examinations are
in addition to the course examinations.
 12.
Candidates in an Honours program for the BA or BSc degree who have passed all
courses of the final year, but who have failed to obtain the requisite average of Honours, may
elect to receive a General degree. They may not repeat the Fourth Year to upgrade.
