SECONDARY PROGRAMS AVAILABLE TO HONOURS STUDENTS

 Administration Option
 J. Richard Elliott, PhD, Co-ordinator
The Administration Option is available only to students registered in
Honours programs. Normally students will register for the Option during their First or Second
Year. Transfers into the Option after Second Year must be approved by a co-ordinating
committee consisting of four members, two appointed by the Dean of Arts and Science and two
by the Dean of the School of Business and Economics. When an Honours Music student is
considered for such a transfer, the committee will consult with the Dean of the Faculty of
Music. The Administration Option consists of the following seven credits:
      First Year
      BU111, BU121, EC120, EC140.
      Second Year
      BU155 (Recommended) or BU115; BU227, BU247
      Third and Fourth Years
      EN227 or EN228; BU208, BU352, BU383, BU385, BU388; BU481 (must be taken in Fourth
      Year).

 Notes:
 1.
For progression to Third Year in the Option, students must have completed all First
and Second Year Option courses with a GPA of at least 6.00. For graduation, students must
obtain a GPA of at least 6.00 in all Option course(s) normally taken in Third and Fourth Year.
 2.
Students who fail to meet GPA requirements by May 1 of their Second or Fourth
Year may repeat courses in the summer following, but must meet requirements by August 31.
A maximum of one and a half credits may be repeated.
 3.
Students whose program requires CP102 or CP104 may substitute this course for
      BU155 or BU115.
 4.
At least four and a half of the seven credits in the Option must be completed at
      Wilfrid Laurier University.
 5.
Students in Third and Fourth Year considering an MBA program following
graduation should consult with the Co-ordinator of the Administration Option regarding course
      selection.
 6.
The prerequisites for BU383, BU385, EN227 and EN228 are waived for students
in the Administration Option. Students whose discipline or major does not require a statistics
course are advised to complete BU385 prior to attempting BU383.
 Internship Option
The Internship Option was introduced in the Faculty of Arts and Science to offer Honours
students an educational alternative. A number of students find their academic program more
purposeful when pursued on the basis of incorporating supervised work experience, related to
their field of study, as part of their degree requirements.

The program requires students to complete two work terms of at least 12
weeks each, in approved employment related to their discipline. Normally work terms will be
completed from May to August between Second and Third Year, and between Third and Fourth
Year. Students may not begin a work term before having completed at least four academic
terms.

The Internship Option is available in the following Honours programs:
 Anthropology
 Biology
 Computing and Computer Electronics
 English
 Geography
 History
 Mathematics
 Political Science
 Psychology
 Sociology

To obtain the Internship designation, students must successfully complete
all the requirements of both their academic program and the Internship program. For a complete
description of the academic program, refer to the academic program requirements of the
departments offering the Internship Option.

No academic credit will be given for the work experience gained through
the program. Students successfully completing the option will have the notation `Internship
Option' appended to their transcripts.

The development of suitable work term positions for Internship students is
under the direction of the Internship Office. Students apply to employers with whom they are
interested in working. Employers are encouraged to interview on campus. Students are prepared
for these activities by receiving individual counselling and by attending a series of workshops
specifically prepared for them.

Although employment cannot be guaranteed, every effort is made to ensure
that suitable employment is available for Internship students. Students are compensated by their
employer for work performed.

 Application Procedure:
Honours students apply for Internship during the Winter Term of their First Year, by the
deadline date for preregistration for the next academic year.
Application procedure includes:
completion of an Internship Option application form
registration in an Honours program offering the Internship Option
an admission interview with Internship Co-ordinators.

In order to qualify for an admission interview in September of Second Year,
applicants must obtain a minimum GPA of 7.00 overall in their First Year or a minimum GP
(A) of 7.00 in the course(s) of the student's Honours discipline and a minimum GPA of 6.50
overall in their First Year. Admission decisions are made in September of Second Year. Total

 Professional Experience Program Option
Similar to the Internship Option, the Professional Experience Program Option provides the
student with a discipline related work experience.

The program requires students to complete one work term of 12-16 months
in approved employment related to their discipline after the Third Year of the four year Honours
program.

The Professional Experience Program Option is available in the following
Honours program:

      Computing and Computer Electronics

To obtain the Professional Experience Program designation students must
successfully complete all the requirements of both their academic program and the Professional
Experience Program.

No academic credit will be given for the work experience gained through
the program. Students successfully completing the option will have the notation `Professional
Experience Program Option' appended to their transcripts.

The development of suitable work term positions for Professional
Experience Program students is under the direction of the Internship Office. Students apply to
employers with whom they are interested in working. Employers are encouraged to interview
on campus. Students are prepared for these activities by attending workshops specifically
prepared for them.

No guarantee of suitable employment can be given. Students are
compensated by their employer for work performed.

 Participation Procedures
Honours students register for the Professional Experience Program in the Fall of Third Year and
apply for appropriate job postings, primarily during Fall Term of Third Year. Students become

 General Major, Minor, or Option
Students in Honours programs may choose to organize their elective courses in such a way as
to meet the requirements for a major, minor, or option in a subject other than the Honours
subject(s). Additional courses may be necessary to fulfil these requirements, as well as those of
the Honours program. The following regulations will apply:
 1.
All Common and Special Requirements for the major, minor, or option, must be
fulfilled. (See pages 59, 68 and 70.) Progression in the General major is governed by the
regulations which determine progression in General degree programs.
 2.
The student must achieve a GPA of at least 4.50 on all courses of the major or
minor subject, or on all courses counted toward the interdepartmental major or option. This
regulation does not apply when a greater minimum GPA is required for the secondary program
      chosen.
 3.
An Honours student may receive designation for only one General major and/ or
minor, or option other than the Administration, Internship, and Professional Experience Program
      Options.
 4.
A course counted toward the Honours program may not also be counted toward a
      General major, minor, or option.
 5.
An Honours student may receive designation for only one of the Internship and
      Professional Experience Program Options.
