HONOURS BACHELOR OF MUSIC THERAPY The Honours Bachelor of Music Therapy is a four-year degree program beyond Ontario grade 13 or equivalent standing. It prepares students for professional work in music therapy. The program consists of 20 credits, of which at least nine and a half must be in Music, five must be in psychology and sociology, and five must be in music therapy. Graduates of the program are expected to complete an internship of at least six months following receipt of the degree. Program Regulations 1. Students intending to complete the BMusTh. program must normally be registered full-time throughout; in special instances, part-time study may be allowed. 2. Students in this program will be registered for the first two years in the Honours BMus program. Progression from the First to the Second Year will be governed by the BMus regulations. Admission to the Third Year, when the specific music therapy program begins, will be limited and admission decisions will be based on the following: (a) overall achievement in music and psychology courses with a minimum cumulative GPA of 7.00 required in each discipline and a minimum cumulative GPA of 5.00 in all courses outside of music; (b) a personal interview which will take into account relevant work experience; (c) the recommendation of the music therapy faculty, based on the student's work in the required Second Year introductory course. Note: Students who have completed the first two years of the program and who are not selected to complete the BMusTh. degree will be able to proceed in either a Music program or a psychology program subject to the requirements of the respective programs. 3. For progression to year four and for graduation, a minimum cumulative GPA of 7.00 is required in all psychology courses and in all music courses, and a minimum cumulative GPA of 5.00 is required in all courses outside music. 4. For students with prior university education, admission will be on the basis of transcripts, an audition, and an interview; the number of transfer credits will be determined by the faculty. A minimum of 10 credits must be completed at Wilfrid Laurier University. 5. Failure to obtain the required standards in any year of the program will necessitate withdrawal from the program. 6. A candidate for the BMusTh degree who has passed all courses of the final year, but who has failed to obtain the required graduation average, has the option of being awarded a BA (music major) degree. Program of Study Music courses required: MU190A*, MU290A*; MU396, MU496; if MU390A* is elected instead of MU396, MU490A* instead of MU496, the additional half-credit counts as Music elective ; MU161, MU162, MU181, MU186 , MU187 , MU266, MU268, MU281, MU286 , MU287 , MU364, MU270 and MU271; one half Music credit including study of a second instrument or voice (MU251L, MU251M, and MU296P are particularly recommended.) Music therapy courses required: MU258, MU352, MU354*, MU362, MU363, MU453, MU454, MU455, MU464B. Psychology courses required: PS100*, PS204*, PS206; PS216 or PS226; PS228, PS248, PS304*. One music or non-Music elective credit. The following are strongly recommended: BI210, BI220; PC102*; and SL201, SL202. Honours Music (BA) in Combination with Another Honours Program The combined Honours BA Music program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent). Not more than six of these may be at the 100 level. A minimum of eight credits is required in Music of which six must be at the senior level. The required music courses (6.5 credits) include: Theory: MU161, MU162, MU266, MU268 Musical skills: MU186 , MU187 , MU286 , MU287 Music History: MU171, MU270, MU271, and one elective from the MU370 series Twentieth-century: MU375 or MU461 or MU462 In Fourth Year, MU478*, which shall include a major paper and a comprehensive examination in music history or theory. The elective Music courses (1.5 credits) shall be taken in music history and/or theory and/or (with permission of the Dean of Music) practical study. Admission to the program requires meeting the admission requirements of the Faculty of Arts and Science and successful completion of an audition and a theory placement test.
