General Music Regulations Validating Examinations Students admitted to the Faculty of Music with unusually extensive training in performance, music history, and/or music theory, but without corresponding university credits, may earn credit for certain courses in these areas through satisfactory completion of validating examinations. The examinations should be completed within one year of the date of admission to WLU. Students will not receive grades for courses for which credit is earned by validating examination. Students will not receive credit for validating examinations until they have completed a course at this University. To write a validating examination, students must receive permission from the Dean and apply to the Office of the Registrar. A nonrefundable fee is charged. Temporary Withdrawal Students who withdraw from the BA Music major, the Bachelor of Music, the Bachelor of Music Therapy, or the Diploma in Performance program and at a subsequent time wish to re-enter the program must successfully complete an audition. See page 35 for regulations relative to re-entry into a program. Ensemble Policy The Honours BMus student participates in choir, orchestra, and/or other ensembles, depending on the requirements of the particular program. Among the possibilities are the WLU Choir; the WLU Women's Choir; the Laurier Singers; the Chapel Choir; operatic ensembles; WLU Orchestra; WLU Wind Ensemble; Baroque, Jazz, and Chamber Ensembles; and Contemporary Players. The University reserves the right to assign students to ensembles. Consideration will include both the needs of the student and the requirements of the ensemble program. On recommendation of the keyboard instructor and with permission of the Dean, Third- and Fourth-year keyboard players may meet the ensemble requirement by accompanying. Students in the church music program should participate in the Chapel Choir. Auditions are required for participation in any ensemble. First-year BMus students may perform in the WLU Instrumental Jazz Ensemble only as a second ensemble (MU182), which requires prior completion of the piano proficiency requirement. BMus students may credit no more than two years of jazz ensemble toward their degrees. Second- Third- and Fourth-Year BMus students who register in jazz ensemble are encouraged to enrol concurrently in a course in jazz harmony or arranging (MU265, MU267, MU269, MU369). The Faculty of Music recognizes that performing engagements outside the University, particularly those of a professional nature, are important in the development of careers in music. However, students must consider the rehearsal and performance schedules of the University ensembles their first priority. Other engagements must be arranged around those schedules. All music students are expected to give the Dean of the Faculty of Music advance written notice of all musical activity they intend to undertake outside of the Faculty during the academic year. In some cases students may be advised to curtail such activity.
