DIPLOMA PROGRAMS
There are three diplomas programs offered in the School of
Business and Economics: The
Diploma in Management Studies, the Diplomas in Business
Administration, and the Diploma in
Accounting. A student may enrol in and qualify to receive a
diploma in only one of the
programs.
Admission requirements and specific academic
regulations for each of the
diplomas are outlined below. Note that the last grade received on
any course attempt will be
used to calculate the Grade Point Average (GPA) and that no
course may be attempted more
than twice. This rule applies to courses taken at this and other
institutions.

Diploma in Management Studies Program
The Diploma in Management Studies is designed to introduce
holders of non-Business degrees
to the functional areas of Business and to allow students to
explore areas of special interest in
their final term. Exceptional students may wish to use the
program as a vehicle to enter a Master
of Business Administration program.
The program is three academic terms in length. Term
Two (Fall) and Term
Three (Winter) must be taken on a full-time bases.
Admission requirements
1.
Admission to the program normally requires an
undergraduate degree. This may
be in any discipline except Business.
2.
Students may be admitted directly into Term Two if they
have completed all of
Term One or its equivalent.
3.
Exemptions may be granted for any three of BU155, or
BU205, or BU231, or
BU388, or their equivalents. Students granted these exemptions
must substitute Business electives
as approved by the External Programs Director.
4.
Normally, students must attain a minimum GPA of 6.00 in
the courses in Term One
in order to be admitted to Term Two. This average must be
attained with a maximum of four
credit attempts; that is, only two courses may be repeated or
substituted. This rule applies to
courses taken at this and other institutions. Note that a higher
average may be required if the
demand from qualified applicants for places in the program
exceeds the number of places
available.
The program is three terms in duration of which
Terms Two and Three are
offered only on a full-time basis.

Academic Regulations:
1.
Students who do not attain the required GPA in the
courses of Term One may be
allowed to proceed on probation without condition by a motion of
the faculty of the Department
of Business.
2.
In order to graduate, students must attain a minimum
cumulative GPA of 7.00 in
the required and elective courses in Terms Two and Three. This
average must be attained with
a maximum of five and one-half credit attempts in these terms
combined; that is, only one
course may be repeated or substituted.
3.
Term Two and Term Three must be taken consecutively and
on a full-time basis.
4.
Students have until August 31 of the academic year in
which they are enrolled to
complete Term Two and Term Three requirements.
Diploma in Business Administration Program
The Diploma in Business Administration has been designed to meet
the needs of people with
work experience in business or government who wish to enhance
their skills in the functional
areas of administration.
The courses in the program have been selected to
give broad coverage of
the functional areas of management.
The program is made up of six credits (four required
and two elective). It
is a part-time program only. Courses are offered in the evenings.
Admission requirements
1.
Students must have three years of work experience in
business or government
following their most recent formal education or an undergraduate
degree in any discipline except
business.
2.
Students may be granted a maximum of two credits toward
the diploma for courses
taken prior to admission to the program. This rule applies to all
students with or without a
previous degree or diploma.

Laurier University after
admission to the program.
Note:
Although diploma students are allowed to take BU255/EC255 without
the prerequisite of
MA130, such students should be aware that the other members of
the class will have taken this
Mathematics course and the instructors may assume that all
students have the same level of
sophistication in mathematics. As a result, students without the
prerequisite may be at a
disadvantage.
Diploma in Accounting Program
The Diploma in Accounting has been designed to meet the needs of
people planning for a career
in accounting.
The program is offered on both a full-time and a
part-time basis. Full-time
students must take Term Two in the fall and Term Three in the
winter.

Note:
The Diploma in Accounting does not include all of
the courses needed to
satisfy Chartered Accountant or Certified Management Accountant
program requirements. These
additional courses are available, however, through the Department
of Business. See the External
