MAJORS

 Common Requirements for the Major
A General student must select a major subject no later than the
beginning of the Second Year. However, any student wishing a
Music major must register for it at the beginning of the First
Year. Registration in a major is not permitted unless the student
has obtained a GP(A) of at least 4.00 in the required junior
credit(s) of the major subject. (Exceptions must be approved by
both the Department offering the major and the Dean of Arts and
Science.)

A major must include any required junior credit(s)
and a minimum of four but no more than six senior credits in the
major subject. Where no junior credit is required or taken, the
major must include a minimum of five senior credits in the major
subject. A maximum of seven credits in the major subject may be
included in the program. This maximum is increased to eight when
two junior credits are required for a major in the subject
concerned. Any cross-listed credits completed by the student and
listed in the major subject are counted toward this maximum,
regardless of the student's actual registration in such courses.

 Special Requirements for the Major
In addition to completing all the Common Requirements for the
major, the student must also complete the applicable Special
Requirements. The majors in Archaeology, Canadian Studies,
Communication Studies, Development and International Studies,

 Requirements
 1.
The major consists of seven credits.
 2.
Students must take WS200 and WS300.
 3.
The remaining six credits must be selected from the
following list of approved courses for the Women's Studies major,
and must be distributed so as to include a minimum of one
half-credit course from each of at least four of the following
      five areas:

 Course Categories
Feminism: Theory and Practice: EN225, SY204*, SY403, SY452t.

from the University of Waterloo Women's Studies list, and, with
prior approval of the Co-ordinating Committee, any Special Topics
course. Students may request to have these courses approved as
requirements for the above areas. However, students should note
that WLU residency requirements stipulate that 75 percent of the
courses in the major must be taken at WLU (i.e. five and a half
      of seven credits).
 5.
Students should include in the First Year of their
program the prerequisite courses for any senior courses in the
Women's Studies major they intend to take. For example, SY201*,
      SY204*, SY233*, SY338, SY403 and SY452t all have as prerequisite
SY100*. Information regarding prerequisites will be found in the
course description section of this calendar. Students are advised
to consult with the Women's Studies Co-ordinator when selecting
courses for their first as well as subsequent years.

 Note:
Students combining the Women's Studies major with a Sociology
program (other than a minor) may count a maximum of one credit in
Sociology courses approved for Women's Studies towards both
programs (i.e. SY201*, SY204*, SY233*, SY234, SY338, SY403,
SY452t).
