 Honours Anthropology
The Honours Anthropology program consists of 20 full-credit
courses (or equivalent) of which not more than six may be at the
100 level. A minimum of 10 and a maximum of 12 credits must be
taken in Anthropology.

    For admission to Second Year, a GPA of 6.00 is
required in AN101, AN102 and SY100*.

 Honours Anthropology in Combination with Another
Honours Program
The combined Honours Anthropology program consists of 20
full-credit courses (or equivalent) of which not more than six
may be taken at the 100 level. A minimum of seven Anthropology
credits is required, and a maximum of nine Anthropology credits
may be taken.

    The Anthropology courses must include: AN101, AN102,
AN210; one of AN201, AN203, AN205; two of AN206, AN207, AN208,
AN213, AN221; AN371 and either AN329 or AN330; either AN450* or
AN454*.

 Honours Archaeology
The Interdepartmental Honours Program in Archaeology consists of
a minimum of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent). Four areas
are offered: Near Eastern, Classical, Prehistoric and North
American Historical/Industrial. Students should strive to choose
their area program in the First Year. The programs have six core
credits in common. In addition, each program has a number of
particular courses that are required, some in Archaeology and
some in related fields.

    Students wishing to change area programs should
consult with the Co-ordinator.

    The Core Program consists of AR100*, AR245*, AR306*
and AR341*, and two Archaeology credits not in the student's area
program, one credit of which is predetermined by the course
requirements of each area. The Honours GPA progression
requirements for all Archaeology areas includes all required
courses.

       With departmental approval a student in the General
      program may transfer to the Honours program after fulfilling all
      the Honours requirements up to the time of transfer. Students

      program because of an insufficient GPA may re-enter the program
      provided that by the end of the academic year following transfer
      to the General program, they have

 Honours English Language and Literature
The Honours English program consists of 20 full-credit courses
(or equivalent). Not more than six of these may be at the 100
level. A minimum of 12 and a maximum of 14 credits are required
in English. For students wishing to graduate with a degree in
Honours English  with Theatre minor, the minimum number of
credits required in English is 12, and the maximum number of
credits in both English and Division A Theatre courses is 15; for
students wishing to graduate in Honours English with Theatre
major, the minimum number of credits required in English is 12,
and the maximum number of credits in both English and Theatre
courses is 17.

credits offered at the Honours level. Department approval must be
obtained for these eight credits.

 Honours French Language and Literature
The Honours French program consists of a minimum of 20
full-credit courses (or equivalent). Not more than seven of these
may be at the 100 level. Students must take at least 11 but no
more than 12 credits in French.

    First Year Francophone students, bilingual students,
and students with credit for OAC French Immersion courses whose
performance on a placement test written during the first week of
classes is deemed satisfactory may be placed in FR251*.

In addition to the requirements in language and literature shown
below, the student must take one credit in the literature of
France preceding 1800, and another credit in the literature of
France after 1800.

The combined Honours French program consists of a minimum of 20
full-credit courses (or equivalent). Not more than seven of these
may be at the 100 level.

      as stated in Honours French except that a minimum of nine credits
      in French is required.

 Honours Geography
The Honours Geography program consists of 20 full-credit courses
(or equivalent) and includes a minimum of 10.5 credits in
Geography and a minimum of eight non-Geography credits. Not more
than six full-credit courses (or equivalent) may be at the 100
level. The program must include at least one half-credit in
curriculum Division A in the General program.

senior History courses, certain of which are required and must be
taken in a specific year of the program.

    One 200 or 300-level credit in Canadian History is
required.

 Honours Philosophy in Combination with Another
Honours Program
The combined Honours Philosophy program consists of 20
full-credit courses (or equivalent). Not more than six of these
may be at the 100 level. A minimum of seven full-credits and a
maximum of nine credits may be in Philosophy.
 1.
       Core Courses (three and a half credits)
       Students must take the following courses: PY110 and
      PY111 (or equivalent); either PY201 or PY204; three of PY256,
      PY259, PY261, PY262, PY263, PY264; a half-credit Fourth Year
      seminar.
 2.
       Elective Courses (three and a half to five and a half
      credits)
       Elective courses in Philosophy must include at least
      three and a half credits, but may include up to five and a half
      credits.
       At least two full credits among the elective courses
      must be at the 300 or 400 level.

 Honours Physical Education
Physical Education is a program with a limited and controlled
enrolment. Students wishing this program must indicate this
preference on the initial application to the University.

    The Honours BA program in Physical Education
consists of a minimum of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent),
not more than six of which may be at the 100 level. The program
must include at least 10 and may include at most 12 senior
credits in Physical Education (see Note 1). All Physical
Education students who were accepted into a physical education
program in June 1992, or after, and who wish to complete the
Honours degree, will be classified as General program students
until the completion of 15 full credits, which must include:
PE121, PE122;  four of PE101  through PE119 , PE207  and/or
PE212; PE210 or PE211; PE216, PE221, PE222, PE231,
PE232, PE241, PE242; PE261 and PE262 or equivalent; four of
PE301  through PE318 ; PE321, PE322, PE323, PE341. Students
meeting these requirements and having a minimum cumulative GPA of
7.00 in all Physical Education courses and a minimum cumulative
GPA of 5.00 in all other courses will be eligible for admission
to the Fourth Year of the program and the opportunity to complete
the Honours degree. Those not meeting the requirements may
complete the General degree requirements as outlined on page 53
of this Calendar.

 Notes:
 1.
       If an equivalent is completed in place of PE261 and
      PE262, (e.g., PS248, PS249, SY280, SY382), nine senior credits
      are required in Physical Education.
 2.
       Every student will be required to participate in two
      different programs associated with sport, physical activity or
      recreation. Each of these programs must consist of at least 48
      participation hours. At least one of these activities must
      involve the student in some form of leadership, administrative or
      instructing capacity in community, school, university or
      privately sponsored programs associated with sport, physical
      activity or recreation. In addition to these types of programs
      the second activity may also involve participation in
      interuniversity or equivalent athletics. Other types of
      activities may also meet these requirements, but must be approved
      by the Department Chair. Appropriate verification of
      participation must be submitted by the student in order to
      complete this requirement.
 3.
       PE210 and PE211 have PS100* and SY100* as their
      respective prerequisites.
 4.
       Students interested in a career in school teaching are
      advised to consult with the Department regarding course
      selection. Students intending to apply to a faculty of education
      at an Ontario university should obtain credit for six or more of
      PE101  through PE119 , PE207  and/or PE212.
 Honours Political Science
The Honours Political Science program consists of 20 full-credit
courses (or equivalent) of which not more than six may be at the
100 level. A student's program must contain at least 11 but no
more than 13 credits in Political Science.

 The Political Science courses must include:
       PO100* or both PO110 and PO111
       One credit in political thought, normally PO235, PO236
       One credit in quantitative methods, normally PO217,
      PO218
       One credit in Canadian government, normally PO263, PO264

       Two full credits at the 300 or 400 level (excluding

      The student must also ensure that at least one credit is obtained

    Students must have their total program approved by
their two Honours Departments by the beginning of each academic
year.

 Honours Psychology
The Honours Psychology program consists of 20 full-credit courses
(or equivalent), including at least 10 but not more than 11.5
credits in Psychology. A maximum of six credits at the 100 level
may be included in the program.

    It is recommended that all students considering
graduate work register for the thesis  course (PS499*) in Fourth
Year. Students who do not take PS499* must take PS498*.

    Students are advised that admission to the Honours
Psychology program does not guarantee admission to PS499*.

    The non-Psychology credits must include at least one
from each of the following groups:
 Group I: BI100*, BI110, BI120, CH100*, CH101*,
      CH110*, CH115*, CP102, CP104, CP114, CP116, GL100*, MA100*,
      MA108, MA109, MA121, MA122, MA130, MA140*, PC100*, PC101*,
      PC102*, PC110*, PC120, a senior credit in any of these
      disciplines or a senior credit in Physical Geography.
 Group II: AN101, AN102, EC120, EC140, PO100*,
      PO110, PO111, SY100*, GG100*, or a senior credit in any of these
      disciplines except Physical Geography.
 Group III: Archaeology; Classics; History;
      Literature or Language; Music History or Literature; Philosophy;
      Religion and Culture.

 First Year
PS100* and four additional elective credits. Ordinarily students
will include one credit from each of the above three groups.

 Second Year
Five credits including:
 1.
       PS298, PS299
 2.
       At least one of PS205, PS215, PS209, PS211, or PS228
      must be completed during either Second or Third Year.
 3.
       At least one of PS219, PS221, PS225, or PS229 must be
      completed during either Second or Third Year. Students are
      encouraged to satisfy this requirement in the same year in which
      they satisfy 2 above.
 4.
       At least one of PS206, PS216, PS226, PS231 or PS233*
      must be completed during either Second or Third Year. Each of
      these courses includes a field placement as a course requirement.
 5.
       The prerequisites for at least one seminar course taken
      in Third Year.

 Third Year
Five credits including:
 1.
       PS399*
 2.
       At least one of PS311, PS318, PS323, PS324, PS325,
      PS326, PS328. Students who are considering pursuing their
      education beyond the Honours BA are strongly encouraged to
      complete at least two seminars.
 3.
       PS452. This course may be completed in either Third or
      Fourth Year.

 Fourth Year
Five credits, including either PS499* or PS498*.

 Honours Psychology in Combination with Another
Honours Program
The requirements are the same as stated above in Honours
Psychology except that a minimum of eight and a half and a
maximum of 11 credits in Psychology are required. Students who
are required to complete research methods and statistics courses
in the second Honours program should consult with both
Departments to avoid duplication.

 Honours Religion and Culture
The program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent) of
which 10, but no more than 15, must be in Religion and Culture.
Individual programs can be constructed by student and advisor to
meet a variety of needs such as preparation for graduate study,
seminary, or teaching. The Honours students must take RE215 and
RE216, the two Honours seminar courses RE476 and RE477, and the
senior thesis course RE471*. At least one full-credit must be
taken from each of  the following three areas: 
1. Ancient Near East and Mediterranean Religions: RE107, RE108,
RE200, RE201, RE203*, RE207, RE208, RE217, RE219, RE222, RE223,
RE301, RE302*, RE305, RE307, RE308, RE309, RE310*, RE343, RE344,
RE345, RE346; 
2. Western Religions: Early to Modern: RE103, RE104, RE224,

from each of Divisions B and C in the General program. At least
one credit in a foreign language is strongly recommended. A limit
of six credits may be taken at the 100 level. 

 Honours Religion and Culture in Combination with
Another Honours Program
The requirements are the same as stated above in Honours Religion
and Culture except that a minimum of eight credits is required in
Religion and Culture.

 Honours Sociology
The program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent) of
which not more than six may be at the 100 level. The program must
include a minimum of 11 credits (two at the 400 level) and may
include a maximum of 13 credits in Sociology. The program must
also include AN101 and one additional half credit in
Anthropology.

 First Year

 Third Year

courses are required to have the prerequisite of one of SY203*,
SY280, SY281 or permission of the Department).

Two credits in Sociology at the 400 level.
Three credits including at least one in Sociology and at least
one elective credit approved by the Department.

courses are required to have the prerequisite of either SY387 or
SY388 or permission of the Department).

Program
The combined Honours Sociology program consists of 20 full-credit
courses (or equivalent) not more than six of which may be at the
100 level. The program must include a minimum of seven and may
include a maximum of nine credits in Sociology.
Sociology requirements include:
SY100*, SY203*, SY280, SY281, SY382; either SY387 or SY388; two
credits in Sociology at the 400 level.

 Honours Spanish
For Honours Spanish, a minimum of 20 full-credit courses (or
equivalent) must be successfully completed before graduation of
which ten must be in Spanish; at least three credits must be
obtained in language courses, one credit in Survey of Spanish
Literature courses, one half credit in Spanish Golden Age
Literature courses, and one credit in Spanish American Literature
courses. Students may be required to take a comprehensive
examination at the end of their last year.

 Honours Spanish in Combination with Another Honours
Program
The combined Honours Spanish program consists of a minimum of 20
full-credit courses (or equivalent). Students in this program
will take a minimum of nine credits in Spanish of which three
must be obtained in language courses, one in Survey of Spanish
Literature courses, one half in Spanish Golden Age Literature
courses, and one in Spanish American Literature courses.

The recommended program above stipulates nine credits in Spanish,
