Honours Biology The Honours Biology (BSc) program consists of a minimum of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent). The theme of the program emphasizes comparative aspects of biology including structure, function and taxonomy. BI490*, BI491 and a minimum of three other Biology credits at the 400 level must be included in the program. 2. Students must select at least one credit in each of the two sub-disciplines (Botany and Zoology) during Second or Third Year. 3. For progression into the Third and Fourth Years, and for graduation, a cumulative GPA of 7.00 in Biology and 6.00 in the required Biology and senior Chemistry courses is required. 4. Honours Biology students in Second, Third, and Fourth Year are expected to attend all Biology Department seminars. 5. Electives must include at least a half credit in the Humanities Division (excluding Mathematics) and a half credit in the Social Sciences Division. 6. With departmental approval, a student in the General program may transfer to the Honours program after fulfilling all the Honours requirements up to the time of transfer. Students (except those who have been permitted to proceed in Honours Biology on probation) who must transfer out of the Honours program because of insufficient GPA may re-enter the program provided that, by the end of the academic year following transfer to the General program, they have: (a) a cumulative GPA in Biology courses of at least 7.00; (b) fulfilled all other Honours program requirements by the time of reinstatement; (c) a GPA of not less than 9.00 on a minimum of two and a half Biology credits taken in that year. Honours BA Biology Program (see page 64) Honours Biology Internship Option (see page 60) Honours Biology and Chemistry The combination Honours Biology and Chemistry (BSc) program consists of a minimum of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent), with at least six senior credits in each of Biology and Chemistry. Honours Biology with Environmental Science Option The requirements are the same as stated for the Honours Biology (BSc) program with the following modifications: (a) The senior credits in Biology must include at least two credits from BI206*, BI305*, BI307*, BI467*. (b) Electives must include at least one credit from CH220*, CH234, either CH235 or CH236, CH320, CH322. (c) Electives must include at least one credit from GG281*, GG283*, GG379, GG383, GG384, GG386. Notes: 1. Students in the Honours Biology with Environmental Science Option are advised to take CH100* and GL100* in their First Year. 2. Only the courses specified above can be used to satisfy the requirements of the Honours Biology with Environmental Science Option. 3. For graduation, students must obtain a GPA of at least 6.00 in all Option elective courses. Honours Biology and Mathematics The Honours Biology and Mathematics (BSc) program consists of a minimum of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent) including at least six and a half senior credits in each of Biology and Mathematics. The program must include at least one credit in each of Botany and Zoology, as determined by the Department of Biology. Required Courses: BI100*, BI490*, BI491 and at least one additional Biology credit at the 400 level CH100*, CH200* CP102 or CP104 MA100*, MA121, MA122, MA200, MA201, MA215, MA222, MA240, MA245, MA250, MA323 and at least two additional Mathematics credits at the 300 or 400 level including at least one at the 400 level. Notes: 1. No degree credit will be given for AS105*, BI101*, BI110, BI120, CH115*, MA130, MA140*, PC101*, PE251, PE451, SC101, SC102, SC103, or SC104. 2. For progression into the Second Year of the program, the requirements include a minimum GPA of 6.00 in MA100*, MA121, and MA122, and a minimum GP of 6.00 in BI100*. For progression into the Third and Fourth Years of the program, and for graduation, the requirements include a minimum cumulative GPA of 7.00 in Biology and Mathematics courses combined. 3. Senior Honours students are expected to attend all departmental seminars. 4. Electives must include at least a half credit in the Humanities Division (excluding Mathematics) and a half credit in the Social Sciences Division. (See Curriculum Divisions, page 49.) 5. While the above schedule constitutes the recommended sequence by which all program requirements are satisfied, other valid sequences are possible. However, many of the required courses have one or more prerequisites and students are advised to be cautious in departing from the recommended schedule. 2. Electives must include at least a half credit from the Humanities Division (excluding Mathematics), and at least a half credit from the Social Science Division (see Curriculum Divisions page 49). These courses, together with either CP102 or CP104, must be completed by the end of Second Year. 3. MA205, PC210 and PC211 must be completed by the end of Third Year. Honours Chemistry with Environmental Science Option The requirements are the same as stated for the Honours Chemistry (BSc) program with the following modifications: (a) The senior credits in Chemistry must include CH234 , and at least one credit from CH235, CH236, CH320, CH322. (b) Electives must include at least one credit from BI206*, BI305*, BI307*, BI467*. (c) Electives must include at least one credit from GG281*, GG283*, GG379, GG383, GG384, GG386. Notes: 1. Students in the Honours Chemistry with Environmental Science Option are advised to take BI100* and GL100* in their First Year. 2. Only the courses specified above can be used to satisfy the requirements of the Honours Chemistry with Environmental Science Option. 3. For graduation, students must obtain a GPA of at least 6.00 in all Option elective courses. Honours Computing and Computer Electronics The aim of the program is to develop an in-depth understanding of computer hardware, microprocessors, microelectronics, digital systems, and software design. The program consists of a minimum of 21 full-credit courses (or equivalent). Not more than six credits may be at the 100 level. The program must include at least one half credit in the Humanities Division (excluding Mathematics). Honours Mathematics The Honours Mathematics (BSc) program consists of a minimum of 20 full-credit (or equivalent) courses including at least 11 and no more than 13 in Mathematics. The program shall include no more than seven 100-level credits.The program must include: MA100*, MA121, MA122, MA200, MA201, MA205, MA215, MA222, MA240, MA250, MA322, MA323, MA489 and at least three and a half additional Mathematics credits at the 300 or 400 level, including at least one and a half at the 400 level. At least two of BI100*, CH100*, GL100* and PC100* CP102 or CP104 Two approved senior Science credits. At most one senior credit in Computing may be counted toward this requirement. Notes: 1. A maximum of six credits at the 100 level may be included in the program. First Year Five credits including: 1. PS100* 2. MA100* or MA140* 3. Two of: BI100*; CH100* (or CH110*); PC100* (or PC110*); GL100*; CP104 and one of CP114 or CP116 or CP102 4. One full credit from AN101, AN102, EC120, EC140, PO100*, PO110, PO111, SY100*, GG100*, or a senior credit in any of these disciplines except Physical Geography. 5. One full credit from Archaeology, Classics, History, Literature or Language, Music History or Literature, Philosophy, Religion and Culture. Note: Either 4 or 5 above may be met after First Year. Second Year Five credits including: 1. PS298, PS299 2. At least two of PS209, PS211, or PS228, of which at least one must be completed during Second Year. 3. At least two of PS219, PS221, or PS229, of which at least one must be completed during Second Year. Students are encouraged to satisfy this requirement in the same year in which they satisfy 2 above. 4. At least one of PS206, PS216, PS226, PS231, or PS233* must be completed during either Second Year or Third Year. Each includes a field placement as a course requirement. 5. At least two credits in senior lab courses in Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Physical Geography, or Physics eligible for credit towards a BSc program must be completed by the end of Fourth Year. 6. At least two additional senior credits in Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Mathematics, Physical Geography, or Physics eligible for credit towards a BSc program must be completed by the end of Fourth Year. 7. At least one of the science courses in 5 or 6 above must be at the 300 or 400 level. Third Year Five credits including: 1. PS399* 2. At least one of PS311, PS318, or PS328. Students who are considering pursuing their education beyond the Honours BSc are strongly encouraged to complete at least two seminars, one of which could be PS323, PS324, PS325, or PS326. 3.
