MEDALS

 The Governor General s Academic Medal
The first medals of the Governor General were awarded in Canada over 100 years
ago.The Earl of Dufferin, the third Governor General after Confederation,
inaugurated what has now become one of the most prestigious awards that a
Canadian graduate student can receive the Governor General's Academic Medal.

    This silver medal is awarded to the undergraduate student who achieves 
the highest academic standing in the graduating class.

 The Lieutenant-Governor s Academic Medal
Inaugurated September 20th, 1953, by the late Honourable L. O. Breithaupt,
the Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, on the occasion of the laying of the 
cornerstone for the Arts Building, this medal is awarded to graduating 
students attaining the highest standing in the senior courses of their 
course of studies in the General Program.

 Alumni Medals
Medal winners must take the majority of their courses at Wilfrid Lauier  
University. To be eligible students must, in the previous academic year, 
have attended Wilfrid Laurier University as full-time students. This 
regulation does not apply to candidates for the Bronze Medal for part-time 
students.

 Gold Medals Honours Programs
For each Convocation a department/faculty may recommend to the committee
on scholarship and bursaries the awarding of a gold medal to a student in
the department/faculty.

    To qualify students must: 
 1.   Have attained the highest average in all senior courses in their
      Honoursprogram.
 2.   Have a minimum GPA of 10.00 in such courses.
 3.   Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 10.00. Recommended students
      must bein a department/faculty having at least one non-combined  
      Honours program, though the recipient may be in a combined Honours 
      program. If the department/faculty has both single and combined 
      Honours programs the recommendation must be for students with 
      the highest GPA in the senior courses in their Honours program, 
      whether or not they areregistered in a single or combined program. 
      It is the responsibility of the interdepartmentalcommittee to recommend
      any eligible student enrolled in an interdepartmental Honoursprogram. 
      Normally a recommendation from a department/ faculty will be 
      forstudents graduating at Spring convocation.

    A gold medal may be awarded for the co-operative option in Honours BBA.

 Bronze Medals - General Programs
For each Convocation a department may recommend one student to the committee
on scholarship and bursaries to receive a bronze medal. Eligible students 
must be registered in the graduating year in a General Arts, General 
Science or General Music program, provided that they have attained a 
minimum GPA of 10.00 in the senior courses of their major and a minimum 
cumulative GPA of 10.00.

    If eligible students are registered in an interdepartmental major,
the nomination shall be made by the interdepartmental committee of their 
major.

 Bronze Medals - Part-time Student
The University will award a bronze medal at each Convocation, open to part-time
students in any General program with a minimum GPA of 10.00, for the 
attainment of the highest cumulative GPA based on 15 two-term courses, or 
equivalent. To qualify students must have taken all their work as a 
part-time student.

 Graduation with Distinction
Students who have achieved, at graduation, a cumulative GPA for all courses
without exception of 11.00 or higher will have the designation "with high 
distinction" appear on their degree.

    Students who have achieved, at graduation, a cumulative GPA
for all courses without exception between 10.00 and 10.99 will have the 
designation "with distinction" appear on their degree.

 Dean s Honour Roll
To be eligible for the Dean's Honour Roll students must have achieved a 
minimum overallgrade point average of 10.00 in all courses taken during 
the year (minimum of five credits). All departmental requirements must be 
fulfilled with no failures or substitutions. Students may have a maximum 
of one credit obtained by letter of permission.

    Students will have a 12-month period (May 1-April 30) in which
to fulfill their program requirements, with the exception of third and 
fourth year co-op students whose 12-month period will be from September 1 
to August 31.
