HONOURS BA PROGRAMS Honours Anthropology The Honours Anthropology program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent) of which not more than six may be at the 100 level. A minimum of 10 and a maximum of 12 credits must be taken in Anthropology. For admission to Second Year, a GPA of 6.00 is required in AN101, AN102 and SY100*. Honours Archaeology The Interdepartmental Honours Program in Archaeology consists of a minimum of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent). Four areas of specialization are offered: Near Eastern, Classical, Prehistoric and North American Historical/Industrial. Although the four areas have six common Core credits as noted below, each program also has a number of particular courses that are required, some in Archaeology and some in related fields. Consequently, students should strive to choose their area of specialization in the First Year, and those wishing to change programs should consult with the Co-ordinator. The Core Program consists of AR100*, AR245*, AR306*, AR341*, and two archaeology credits not in the student's area program, one credit of which is predetermined by the course requirements of each area. A senior credit in a language other than English must also be completed, unless a written exemption is obtained from the Co-ordinating Committee. For progression purposes, and for graduation, the cumulative GPA will be calculated on all required courses specified in the Core and in the student's area of specialization. Honours BA Biology Program The Honours BA Biology program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent), of which not more than six may be taken at the 100 level. With departmental approval a student in the General program may transfer to the Honours program after fulfilling all the Honours requirements up to the time of transfer. Students (except those who have been permitted to proceed in Honours Biology on probation) who must transfer out of the Honours program because of an insufficient GPA may re-enter the program provided that by the end of the academic year following transfer to the General program, they have: (a) attained a cumulative GPA in Biology of at least 7.00; (b) fulfilled all other Honours program requirements by the time of reinstatement; (c) attained a GPA of not less than 9.00 on a minimum of two and a half Biology credits taken in that year. 2. Honours English Language and Literature The Honours English program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent). Not more than six of these may be at the 100 level. A minimum of 12 and a maximum of 14 credits are required in English. For students wishing to graduate with a degree in Honours English with Theatre minor, the minimum number of credits required in English is 12, and the maximum number of credits in both English and Theatre courses is 15; for students wishing to graduate in Honours English with Theatre major, the minimum number of credits required in English is 12, and the maximum number of credits in both English and Theatre courses is 17. Not more than six of these may be at the 100 level. Students must take EN122* and at least eight English credits offered at the Honours level. Department approval must be obtained for these eight credits. Honours French Language and Literature The Honours French program consists of a minimum of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent). Not more than seven of these may be at the 100 level. Students must take at least 11 but no more than 12 credits in French. First Year Francophone students, bilingual students, and students with credit for OAC French Immersion courses whose performance on a placement test written during the first week of classes is deemed satisfactory may be placed in FR251*. Required courses: In addition to the requirements in language and literature shown below, the student must take one credit in the literature of France preceding 1800, and another credit in the literature of France after 1800. Third Year Abroad The Department of French Language and Literature co-operates with corresponding departments at the universities of Windsor, Western Ontario and Guelph in operating a Third Year Abroad program at the University of Nice, France. Students in good standing in Honours French at WLU may apply to participate in this program. Honours French in Combination with Another Honours Program The combined Honours French program consists of a minimum of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent). Not more than seven of these may be at the 100 level. Note: The requirements are the same as stated in Honours French except that a minimum of nine credits in French is required. Honours Environmental Studies The Honours Environmental Studies (BA) program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent), of which no more than six may be at the 100 level. One 200 or 300 level credit in Canadian History is required. Not more than six of these may be at the 100 level. A student's program must contain at least 11 but may contain no more than 12 credits in Philosophy. 1. Elective Courses (three and a half to five and a half credits) Elective courses in Philosophy must include at least three and a half credits, but may include up to five and a half credits. At least two full credits among the elective courses must be at the 300 or 400 level. Honours Physical Education Physical Education is a program with a limited and controlled enrolment. Students wishing this program must indicate this preference on the initial application to the University. The Honours BA program in Physical Education consists of a minimum of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent), not more than six of which may be at the 100 level. The program must include at least 10 and may include at most 12 senior credits in Physical Education (see Note 1). All Physical Education students who were accepted into a physical education program in June 1992, or after, and who wish to complete the Honours degree, will be classified as General program students until the completion of 15 full credits, which must include: PE121, PE122; four of PE101 through PE119 , PE207 and/or PE212 ; PE210 or PE211; PE216, PE221, PE222, PE231, PE232, PE241, PE242; PE261 and PE262 or equivalent; four of PE301 through PE318 ; PE321, PE322, PE323, PE341. Students meeting these requirements and having a minimum cumulative GPA of 7.00 in all Physical Education courses and a minimum cumulative GPA of 5.00 in all other courses will be eligible for admission to the Fourth Year of the program and the opportunity to complete the Honours degree. Those not meeting the requirements may complete the General degree requirements as outlined on pages 56-57 of this Calendar. Students intending to apply to a faculty of education at an Ontario university should obtain credit for six or more of PE101 through PE119 , PE207 and/or PE212 . Honours Political Science The Honours Political Science program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent) of which not more than six may be at the 100 level. A student's program must contain at least 11 but no more than 13 credits in Political Science. A minimum of seven and a half credits must and a maximum of nine credits may be in Political Science. Honours Psychology The Honours Psychology program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent), including at least 10 but not more than 11.5 credits in Psychology. A maximum of six credits at the 100 level may be included in the program. It is recommended that all students considering graduate work register for the thesis course (PS499*) in Fourth Year. Students who do not take PS499* must take PS498*. Students are advised that admission to the Honours Psychology program does not guarantee admission to PS499*. The non-Psychology credits must include at least one from each of the following groups: Group I: BI100*, BI101*, CH100*, CH101*; one of CP102, BU115 or BU155, CP104, CP114, CP116; one of CP102, BU115 or BU155; GL100*, MA100*, MA121, MA122, MA130, MA140*, PC100*, PC102*, PC110*, PC120, a senior credit in any of these disciplines or a senior credit in Physical Geography. Group II: AN101, AN102, EC120, EC140, PO100*, PO110, PO111, SY100*, GG100*, or a senior credit in any of these disciplines except Physical Geography. Group III: Archaeology; Classics; History; Literature or Language; Music History or Literature; Philosophy; Religion and Culture. First Year PS100* and four additional elective credits. Ordinarily students will include one credit from each of the above three groups. Second Year Five credits including: 1. PS298, PS299 2. At least one of PS205, PS209, PS211, PS215, or PS228 must be completed during either Second or Third Year. 3. At least one of PS219, PS221, PS225, or PS229 must be completed during either Second or Third Year. Students are encouraged to satisfy this requirement in the same year in which they satisfy 2 above. 4. At least one of PS206, PS216, PS226, PS231 or PS233* must be completed during either Second or Third Year. Each of these courses includes a field placement as a course requirement. 5. The prerequisites for at least one seminar course taken in Third Year. Third Year Five credits including: 1. PS399* 2. At least one of PS311, PS318, PS323, PS324, PS325, PS326, PS328. Students who are considering pursuing their education beyond the Honours BA are strongly encouraged to complete at least two seminars. 3. PS452. This course may be completed in either Third or Fourth Year. Fourth Year Five credits, including either PS499* or PS498*. Honours Psychology Co-operative Education Option (see page 65) Honours Psychology in Combination with Another Honours Program The requirements are the same as stated above in Honours Psychology except that a minimum of eight and a half and a maximum of 11 credits in Psychology are required. Students who are required to complete research methods and statistics courses in the second Honours program should consult with both Departments to avoid duplication. Honours Religion and Culture The Honours Religion and Culture program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent), of which at most six credits may be at the 100 level and at least a half credit must be from each of Curriculum Divisions B and C in the General program (page 53). A minimum of 10, but no more than 15, of the 20 credits must be in Religion and Culture courses, and must include RE300, RE400, at least one additional 400 level credit, and courses from Group I (Religious Traditions of the World), Group II (Thematic and Comparative) and Group III (Approaches to the Study of Religion and Research Tools) below: Group I: at least one half credit must be taken from each of three of the following five categories: Ancient Near-Eastern and Mediterranean Religions: RE107, RE200, RE203*, RE262, RE302*, RE308, RE309, RE310*, RE345, RE346, RE444. Christianity: RE201, RE215, RE216, RE219, RE301, RE311, RE335, RE356, RE432. Judaism and Islam: RE213, RE227, RE304, RE305, RE343, RE351, RE352. Asian Religions: RE246, RE250, RE251, RE298, RE321, RE424. Indigenous Religions: RE211, RE318. Group II: at least one credit must be taken from RE103, RE104, RE108, RE212*, RE224, RE228, RE230, RE233, RE235, RE236, RE248, RE296, RE312, RE313, RE319, RE322, RE328, RE330, RE331, RE336, RE337, RE344, RE372 Group III: at least one half credit must be taken from RE100, RE101, RE140*, RE143, RE144, RE241, RE242, RE260, RE261, RE275, RE316, RE327, RE348, RE456*, RE476, RE477. Note: It is strongly recommended that at least one university-level credit in a foreign language be taken. Students, in consultation with faculty advisors, may construct specialized programs within Religion and Culture to meet a variety of needs such as preparation for graduate study, seminary, or teaching. Honours Religion and Culture in Combination with Another Honours Program The requirements are the same as stated above in Honours Religion and Culture except that a minimum of eight credits is required in Religion and Culture. Honours Sociology The program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent) of which not more than six may be at the 100 level. The program must include a minimum of 11 credits (two at the 400 level) and may include a maximum of 13 credits in Sociology. The program must also include AN101 and one additional half credit in Anthropology. First Year SY100*, AN101 Three and a half elective credits Second Year SY203*, SY280, SY281 Three credits including at least one and a half in Sociology and at least one elective credit approved by the Department. Third Year SY382; either SY387 or SY388 Four credits including at least two and a half in Sociology and at least one elective credit approved by the Department. (Except where otherwise stated, all students taking 300 level courses are required to have the prerequisite of one of SY203*, SY280, SY281 or permission of the Department). Fourth Year Two credits in Sociology at the 400 level. Three credits including at least one in Sociology and at least one elective credit approved by the Department. (Except where otherwise stated, all students taking 400 level courses are required to have the prerequisite of either SY387 or SY388 or permission of the Department). Honours Sociology Co-operative Education Option (see page 65) Honours Sociology in Combination with Another Honours Program The combined Honours Sociology program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent) not more than six of which may be at the 100 level. A minimum of seven and a maximum of nine credits in Sociology must be completed, including: SY100*, SY203*, SY280, SY281, SY382; either SY387 or SY388; two credits in Sociology at the 400 level. Honours Sociology and Social Anthropology The Honours Sociology and Social Anthropology program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent), including AN101, AN102, SY100* and at most four other credits at the 100 level. A minimum GPA of 6.0 in AN101, AN102 and a GP of at least 6.0 in SY100* are required for progression into the second year of the program; for progression into subsequent years, and for graduation, the cumulative GPA will be calculated on the Anthropology and Sociology courses combined. Required senior courses: AN210, AN337, AN371; one of AN201, AN203, AN205; at least one of AN206, AN207, AN208, AN213, AN221; at least 4.5 additional senior credits in Anthropology, of which at least one credit must be at the 300 level and at least two credits must be at the 400 level. SY203*, SY280, SY281, SY338, SY387, SY388 and at least three additional senior credits in Sociology, of which at least one half credit must be at the 300 level and at least two credits must be at the 400 level. Note: Students may choose to complete an honours thesis in either sociology or social anthropology, or on a topic that combines the perspectives of both disciplines. Honours Spanish The Honours Spanish program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent) of which at least 10 must be in Spanish including SP201, SP202, SP205, SP206, SP227, SP228, SP261, SP262; SP326 or SP327; SP351, SP352. A maximum of six 100 level credits may be counted towards the program. Honours Spanish in Combination with Another Honours Program The requirements are the same as stated above for Honours Spanish except that a minimum of eight credits in Spanish is required.
