HONOURS PROGRAMS
The primary objective of every Honours program is to develop
knowledge, appreciation, and skills in the student's chosen Honours
subject, while at the same time fostering a perspective on the
relation of the Honours subject to other disciplines.
Honours BSc programs emphasize the interrelationships
among the natural sciences, mathematics, and computing, in addition
to the intensive study of one or more specific subjects in this
area. Honours BSc programs are
available in:
Biology Chemistry and Mathematics
Biology and Chemistry Computing and Computer Electronics
Biology and Mathematics Geography
Biology and Physical Geography Mathematics
Chemistry Psychology
Honours BA programs provide concentration in subjects
in the humanities, social sciences, and biology, as well as
opportunities for students to become aware of the relation of their
Honours subject(s) to other disciplines in the humanities, social
sciences, natural sciences, and elsewhere. Honours BA programs are
available in the following subjects:
Anthropology History
Archaeology Latin*
Biology Mathematics
Classical Studies Music*
Economics Philosophy
English Language and Literature Physical Education
Environmental Studies Political Science
French Psychology
Geography Religion and Culture
German Sociology and Social Anthropology
Greek* Spanish
*available only in combination with another Honours program
Honours students have a wide choice of secondary programs
available to them. It is usually possible to combine two Honours
BA subjects into a 'Combined Honours'' program; as noted above, two
Honours BA subjects are available only in this form. Honours
students in all programs may be eligible for the Administration
Option (page 64). Honours students may select a General Major, a
Minor, or any other Option (page 64) as a secondary program.
Students in specified Honours programs are also eligible for the
Co-operative Education Option (page 65), a work-study program.
Regulations for Honours Programs
All students registered in Honours programs offered by the Faculty
of Arts and Science are subject to the following regulations:
1. An Honours program must consist of a minimum of 20
full-credit courses (or equivalent) including at least nine
senior credits in the area of specialization or at least six
senior credits in each of two areas of specialization at the
Honours level. Individual Departments may require more than the
minimum stated above. Students may elect to take a combined
Honours program (available combinations are described on pages
66-83). In cases when program descriptions of each of the
constituent parts of a combination stipulates a different
number of courses required for the combination, the larger
total will apply.
2. Progression requirements will be based on grade point averages
obtained from all courses taken and will be calculated on a
cumulative basis. For progression from First Year to Second
Year, the requirement will be a minimum GP(A) of 6.00 in each
of the Honours subject(s) of specialization and a minimum GPA
of 4.00 in other subjects. For admission to Third Year and
Fourth Year and for graduation a minimum cumulative GPA of 7.00
in each area of specialization and a minimum cumulative GPA
of 5.00 in other subjects is required. Some programs have
additional progression requirements stated in the program
description.
For students in the Administration Option, all First and
Second Year courses must be completed with a minimum GPA of
6.00 for progression to Third Year; for graduation, students
must obtain a minimum GPA of 6.00 in all option courses
normally taken in Third and Fourth Year.
3. Where student demand for entry or progression into the
Second Year of an Honours Program in Arts and Science exceeds
the availability of student spaces, students who meet the
minimum criteria for progression from First to Second
Year will be considered for admission on the basis of their
overall GPA (from all courses taken at Wilfrid Laurier
University). Departments which intend to use other forms of GPA
calculation must so advise students by October 1.
4. Students enrolled in Honours Programs who have failed to
achieve the standing required for admission to the subsequent
year of their program may proceed on academic probation for a
period of twelve months, providing the Honours Department
recommends, and the Dean approves, such action. An Honours
student may proceed on probation only once. The terms of
probation, normally including making up deficiencies from the
previous year, will be determined by the Dean and the Chair of
the Honours Department and will be conveyed to the student by
the Office of the Registrar.
5. Unless other department regulations apply, students having
failed a course may proceed in the Honours Program, provided
they have the required average. For calculation of a GPA
involving a repeated course, see the calendar section on
grades. Unless other departmental regulations apply, students
having failed a course may proceed in the Honours Program
provided that they have the required average. Such a student
must repeat a failed course if it is a required course. If
it is not a course required for the program, the student may
repeat the course or take an additional course. No course may
be attempted more than twice.
6. At the end of the First Year, students may transfer into an
Honours Program from either a General or another Honours
Program at the discretion of the Department. Thereafter
students may not transfer unless they have maintained
the progression requirements. In Departments where there is a
distinctio between Honours and General level courses, students
may count a maximum of two senior General credits toward their
Honours course requirements. All transfers after the end of
the First Year must have the approval of both the Department
and the Dean.
7. Students must have their total program approved by their
Honours Department(s) by the beginning of each academic year.
8. Any exceptions to the Honours regulations require the written
approval of both the Department and the Dean, except that in
each case a minimum of 20 credits (or equivalent) is required
for graduation.
9. Candidates in an Honours Program for the BA or BSc degree
who have passed all courses of the final year, but have failed
to obtain the requisite average for an Honours degree, may
elect to receive a General degree. They may not repeat the
Fourth Year to upgrade.
