General Major, Minor, or Option
Students in Honours programs may choose to organize their elective
courses in such a way as to meet the requirements for a major,

Additional courses may be necessary to fulfil these requirements,
as well as those of the Honours program. The following regulations
will apply:

option, must be fulfilled. (See pages 53-60.) Progression in
the General major is governed by the regulations which
determine progression in General degree programs.

counted toward the interdepartmental major or option. This
regulation does not apply when a greater minimum GPA is

General major and/ or minor, or option other than the
Administration, Internship, and Professional Experience Program
Options.
4. A course counted toward the Honours program may not also be
counted toward a General major, minor, or option.

Arts and Science Co-operative Education Option
Assistant Director of Co-operative Education: Karen McCargar, BA,
Ext. 4105
The Option is available in the Faculty of Arts and Science to
offer Honours students an educational alternative. A number of
students find their academic program more purposeful when pursued
on the basis of incorporating supervised work experience, related
to their field of study, as part of their degree requirements.
The program requires students to complete two work terms of at
least 10 weeks each, in approved employment related to their
discipline. Normally work terms will be completed during the summer
after Second and Third Year, however, work term requirements may
also be fulfilled through full- or part-time positions scheduled
during the academic year. Students may not begin a work term before
having completed at least four
academic terms.
The Option is available in the following Honours
programs:
Anthropology
Biology
Computing and Computer Electronics
English
Geography
History
Mathematics
Political Science
Psychology
Sociology
To obtain the Co-op designation, students must successfully
complete all the requirements of both their academic program and
the Co-op program. For a complete description of the academic
program, refer to the academic program requirements of the
departments offering the Co-op Option.
No academic credit will be given for the work experience gained
through the program. Students successfully completing the option
will have the notation Co-op Option' appended to their transcripts
and noted on their degree.
The development of suitable work term positions for
students is under the direction of the Department of Co-operative
Education. Students apply to employers with whom they are
interested in working. Employers are encouraged to interview on
campus. Students are prepared for these activities by receiving
individual counselling and by attending a series of workshops
specifically prepared for them.
Although employment cannot be guaranteed, every effort
is made to ensure that suitable employment is available for Co-op
students. Students are compensated by their employer for work
performed unless students elect to accept volunteer positions.
A Co-op fee is payable in each academic term of Second and Third
Year.
Application Procedure:
Honours students apply for Co-op during the Winter Term of their
First Year, by the deadline date for preregistration for the next
academic year. Application procedure includes:
