A survey of the early phases of the English Language. The grammar
and linguistic background of Old English, Middle English, and early Modern
English are explored in the context of the history and culture of those 
periods. Students are required to attain a basic knowledge of the nature 
and history of the language and a reading competence in Old and
Middle English.
