Introduction to Academic Programs at Laurier

Wilfrid Laurier University offers a wide range of programs leading to Honours and General degrees, post-degree Diplomas, and programs at the Master's and Doctoral level. The undergraduate programs are offered through the Faculties of Arts, Music and Science, and the School of Business and Economics. Combined, simultaneous and sequential undergraduate degree programs are also available at Laurier.

Honours programs require four years of study and lead to an Honours degree (BA, BBA, BBSc, BSc, BMus or BMusTh). The four-year program is arranged to provide mastery of a particular subject or subjects with a liberal education of some depth. Honours program requirements usually stipulate courses that must be taken in each successive year of the program. These program requirements should be followed as closely as possible, but since not every course is offered every year, variations may from time to time be approved by the departments. Students are urged to consult the Course Description chapter for additional information on the required courses and should, in particular, note prerequisites.

The attainment of a General degree in the Faculty of Arts or Science (BA and BSc programs) normally requires three years of study. Each student selects one or more major subjects and is assured of a liberal breadth of studies.

All students, in either General or Honours programs, become acquainted with a variety of subjects, especially in the first year. Both plans of study provide a measure of concentration, which is developed to a greater extent in the Honours programs.

Numerous Options, including the Co-operative and Administrative Options are available to students in specific programs. Several Diploma programs are also available in the Department of Business and the Faculty of Music. Through the Faculty of Graduate Studies, the University offers Doctoral programs, Master's programs in Arts, Business Administration, Social Work and Theology. A Graduate Studies Calendar is available from the Graduate Studies Department and on the University's Web site.

A General Contemporary Studies BA degree program is offered at the Brantford campus. Additional information can be obtained from the Brantford Web site and within the Faculty of Arts chapter.

Laurier has arranged exchange programs in numerous countries around the world. Consult the Laurier International section in the Introducing WLU chapter or their Web site for program details.

New joint undergraduate programs are being made available with the University of Waterloo and Conestoga College. See the Faculty chapters for further information on double degrees and certificate/diploma programs.

University regulations, program requirements and course descriptions are contained within this publication. Academic counsellors and undergraduate advisors are available on campus to provide additional assistance.

The Academic Awards, Scholarships, Bursaries, Grants and Loans chapter outlines options for financial support at Laurier. More information is available directly from the Office of the Registrar – Student Awards Office.

The chapter on Undergraduate Admissions provides information about the application process; the University Regulations chapter contains information on registration and University-wide academic regulations.

The academic regulations governing a student's program are those in effect at the time of initial registration at Wilfrid Laurier University, except that when academic regulations change prior to the completion of the program, the student may chose to have the new regulations apply. All course and grade point average regulations of the new program must be followed. See the University Regulations chapter, or the appropriate academic department for more information regarding this program requirement.
