Program Regulations

  1. Students intending to complete the BMusTh program must normally be registered full-time throughout; in special instances, part-time study may be allowed.
  2. Students in this program will be registered for the first two years in the Honours BMus program. Progression from First to Second Year will be governed by the BMus regulations. Admission to Third Year, when the specific music therapy program begins, will be limited and admission decisions will be based on the following:
    1. Overall achievement in Music and Psychology courses with a minimum cumulative GPA of 7.00 required in each discipline and a minimum cumulative GPA of 5.00 in all courses outside of music; a lower cumulative GPA in Psychology courses (but not lower than 5.00) may be allowed when, in the judgement of the Faculty of Music, a student has outstanding clinical potential.
    2. GraphicsAn individual interview that will take into account students' musical and interpersonal skills through the ability to:
      1. accompany themselves (on piano or guitar) and sing
      2. improvise
      3. demonstrate their experience with special needs persons.

    3. The recommendation of the Music Therapy Faculty, based on the student's work in the required Second Year introductory course.

    Note: Students who have completed the first two years of the program and who are not selected to complete the BMusTh degree will be able to proceed in either a Music program or a Psychology program subject to the requirements of the respective programs.

  3. For progression to Fourth Year and for graduation, a minimum cumulative GPA of 7.00 is required in all Psychology courses and a minimum cumulative GPA of 7.00 in all Music courses, and a minimum cumulative GPA of 5.00 is required in all courses outside Music. A lower cumulative GPA in Psychology courses (but not lower than 5.00) may be allowed when, in the judgement of the Faculty of Music, a student has outstanding clinical potential.

    GraphicsIf a student receives a grade of Unsatisfactory in any practicum, the student must complete an extra practicum with a grade of Satisfactory.

  4. For students with prior university education, admission will be on the basis of transcripts, an audition, and an interview; the number of transfer credits will be determined by the faculty. A minimum of 10 credits must be completed at Wilfrid Laurier University.
  5. Failure to obtain the required standards in any year of the program will necessitate withdrawal from the program.
