Notes:

  1. By co-operative agreement with the Department of Anthropology and Classical Studies at the University of Waterloo, certain courses may, from year to year, be available at only one of the two Universities. Courses other than those specified each year may be taken for credit only by cross-registration. GR101 and GR102 are taught separately at each university; GR201 and GR202 are also offered separately when enrolments warrant.
  2. Sight translation is included in all courses.
  3. Students entering with ability in ancient Greek, should consult with the Department to determine advanced standing.

GR101 Introductory Ancient Greek I F 0.5

Ancient Greek for beginners. A study of some of the basic forms and concepts that underlie the language. Students who desire a minimal reading competence should continue to GR102.

Exclusion: GR100*, RE143, RE144.

GR102 Introductory Ancient Greek II W 0.5

A continuation of GR101. Most of the rules of grammar will be covered in this course and students will continue to read decreasingly adapted texts in the original language. (Students wishing further practice and a more complete survey of grammar should continue to GR201.)

Prerequisite: GR101.
Exclusion: GR100*, RE144.

GR201 Intermediate Greek 0.5

The course will complete the study of Greek grammar and move on to unadapted readings in Greek authors.

Prerequisite: GR102 (or permission of the Department.)
Exclusion: GR231, GR232.

GR202 Selections from Greek Authors 0.5

A course designed to follow GR201 including both literature and grammar. Authors normally read are Plato and Homer.

Prerequisite: GR201.
Exclusion: GR232, GR262, GR271.

GR351 Advanced Composition, Grammar and Reading 0.5

Intensive study of Greek language and style through composition, translation and reading of Greek prose.

Prerequisite: GR202.

GR363 Introduction to Greek Tragedy 0.5

An examination of the dramatic art of Euripides and Sophocles, through readings in Greek supplemented by readings in English translation.

Prerequisite: GR202
Exclusion: GR361, GR362, GR461.

GR370 Greek Historians 0.5

The writings of one or more of Herodotus, Thucydides and Xenophon will be studied.

Prerequisite: GR202.
Exclusion: GR371, GR372, GR471.

GR375 Homer 0.5

Extended reading of Homer.

Prerequisite: GR202.
Exclusion: GR452.

GR472 Advanced Readings in Greek Poetry 0.5

Selections from such authors as Aeschylus and the Lyric poets will be examined.

Prerequisite: GR202 (one Greek course at the 300 level is strongly recommended).
Exclusion: GR461.

GR473 Greek Comedy 0.5

Selected comic plays of Aristophanes and Menander will be examined.

Prerequisite: GR202 (one Greek course at the 300 level is strongly recommended).
Exclusion: GR462.

GR474 Advanced Reading in Greek Prose 0.5

The works of Demosthenes, Lysias and other prose writers may be included.

Prerequisite: GR202 (one Greek course at the 300 level is strongly recommended).

GR475 Readings in Greek Philosophy 0.5

One or more authors may be read from the Pre-Socratics, Plato and Aristotle.

Prerequisite: GR202 (one Greek course at the 300 level is strongly recommended).
Exclusion: GR481, GR482.

GR490 Directed Study 0.5

Individual study of some aspect of Greek language or literature.

Prerequisite: GR202 (one Greek course at the 300 level is strongly recommended).

GR495* Directed Study 1.0

Individual study of some aspects of Greek language or literature.

Prerequisite: GR202 (one Greek course at the 300 level is strongly recommended).
