Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies

Notes:

  1. By co-operative agreement with the Department of Anthropology and Classical Studies at the University of Waterloo, certain courses may, from year to year, be available at only one of the two universities. Courses other than those specified each year may be taken for credit only by cross registration. LA101 and LA102 are taught separately at each university; LA203 and LA204 are also offered separately when enrolments warrant.
  2. Sight translation is included in all courses.
  3. Students entering with OAC Latin should consult with the Department to determine course exemptions.

LA101 Introductory Latin I F 0.5

Latin for beginners. A study of some of the basic forms and concepts that underlie the language. Students who desire a minimal reading competence should continue to LA102.

Exclusion: LA100*, LA105.

LA102 Introductory Latin II W 0.5

A continuation of LA101. Most of the rules of grammar will be covered in this course and students will continue to enhance their knowledge and understanding of Latin morphology and syntax. Students who wish further practice and a more complete survey of grammar should continue to LA203.

Prerequisite: LA101.
Exclusion: LA100*, LA105.

LA203 Intermediate Latin 0.5

The course will complete the study of Latin grammar and move on to unadapted readings in Latin authors.

Prerequisite: LA102 (or permission of the Department).

LA204 Selections from Latin Authors 0.5

A course designed to follow LA203, including both literature and grammar review. A variety of authors are read.

Prerequisite: LA203 (or permission of the Department).

LA351 Latin Composition and Reading 0.5

Composition, translation, basic grammar, with intensive analysis of selected works.

Prerequisite: LA204.

LA363 Roman Comedy 0.5

The study in Latin of at least one play by Plautus or Terence; supplementary readings in translation.

Prerequisite: LA204.

LA364 Roman Oratory and Rhetoric 0.5

Selections from such orators and rhetoricians as Cicero, Seneca, Quintilian and the Panegyricists.

Prerequisite: LA204.
Exclusion: LA361.

LA365 Roman Lyric Poetry 0.5

Selections from Catullus and Horace.

Prerequisite: LA204.
Exclusion: LA281.

LA371 Early Roman Historians 0.5

Readings from one or more of such early historians as Sallust and Livy.

Prerequisite: LA204.
Exclusion: LA262.

LA375 Vergil 0.5

Selections from the Aeneid, Georgics and Eclogues.

Prerequisite: LA204.
Exclusion: LA272, LA461, LA462.

LA381 A Survey of Medieval Latin Poetry and Prose 0.5

Selections from the work of the 4th to the 12th centuries A.D.

Prerequisite: LA204.
Exclusion: LA382.

LA391 Advanced Latin Reading 0.5

A reading course designed to provide an opportunity for individual student's preferences. Consultation between students and faculty will determine the author or authors to be read.

Prerequisite: LA204.

LA421 Roman Epigraphy 0.5

The course introduces and investigates Latin inscriptions as evidence for the language and Roman political, religious, legal, social and economic history.

Prerequisite: LA204 (one Latin course at the 300 level is strongly recommended).

LA431 Roman Philosophy 0.5

Readings from one or more of the principal Roman philosophical writers such as Lucretius, Cicero and Seneca.

Prerequisite: LA204 (one Latin course at the 300 level is strongly recommended).
Exclusion: LA362.

LA452 A Survey of Latin Letter Writing 0.5

Selections from the letters of Cicero, Pliny, Seneca and Medieval writers.

Prerequisite: LA204 (one Latin course at the 300 level is strongly recommended).
Exclusion: LA261.

LA463 Later Roman Historians 0.5

Selections from one or more historians of the Imperial Age.

Prerequisite: LA204 (one Latin course at the 300 level is strongly recommended).
Exclusion: LA372.

LA471 Roman Elegy 0.5

Selections from Propertius, Tibullus and Ovid.

Prerequisite: LA204 (one Latin course at the 300 level is strongly recommended).

LA481 Roman Satire 0.5

Selections from such satirists as Horace, Petronius, Juvenal, Martial and Persius.

Prerequisite: LA204 (one Latin course at the 300 level is strongly recommended).
Exclusion: LA482.

LA490 Directed Studies 0.5

Individual study of some aspect of Latin language or literature.

Prerequisite: LA204 (one Latin course at the 300 level is strongly recommended).
