Medals

The Governor General's Academic Medal

The first medals of the Governor General were awarded in Canada over 100 years ago. The Earl of Dufferin, the third Governor General after Confederation, inaugurated what has now become one of the most prestigious awards that a Canadian graduate student can receive: the Governor General's Academic Medal.

This silver medal is awarded to the undergraduate student who achieves the highest academic standing in the graduating class.

Alumni Medals

Medal winners must take the majority of their courses at Wilfrid Laurier University. To be eligible, students must have attended Wilfrid Laurier University as full-time students in the previous academic year. This regulation does not apply to candidates for the Bronze Medal for part-time students.

Gold Medals – Honours Programs

For each Convocation, a department or faculty may recommend to the committee on scholarship and bursaries the awarding of a gold medal to a student in the department or faculty. To qualify, students must:

  1. Have attained the highest average in all senior courses in their Honours program.
  2. Have a minimum GPA of 10.00 (A-) in such courses.
  3. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 10.00 (A-).

Recommended students must be in a department/faculty having at least one non-combination Honours program, though the recipient may be in a combined Honours program. If the department or faculty has both single and combined Honours programs, the recommendation must be for students with the highest GPA in the senior courses in their Honours program, whether or not they are registered in a single or combined program. It is the responsibility of the interdepartmental committee to recommend any eligible student enrolled in an interdepartmental Honours program. Normally, a recommendation from a department or faculty will be for students graduating at Spring convocation.

A gold medal may be awarded for the Co-op Option in Honours BBA.

Bronze Medals – General Programs

For each Convocation, a department may recommend one student to the committee on scholarship and bursaries to receive a bronze medal. Eligible students must be registered in the graduating year in a General Arts or General Science program, provided that they have attained a minimum GPA of 10.00 (A-) in the senior courses of their major and a minimum cumulative GPA of 10.00 (A-).

If eligible students are registered in an interdepartmental major, the nomination shall be made by the interdepartmental committee of their major.

Bronze Medal – Part-time Student

The University will award a bronze medal at each Convocation, open to part-time students in any General degree program with a minimum GPA of 10.00 (A-), for the attainment of the highest cumulative GPA based on 15 full-credit courses, or equivalent. To qualify, students must have taken all their work as a part-time student.
