DI100 Introduction to Development and International Studies 0.5

An interdisciplinary introduction to the contemporary world that focuses on global issues, challenges and concerns. Topics may include recent political, socio-economic and cultural trends, development, gender, the environment, wealth and poverty and ideology.

Exclusion: DI200 taken prior to 1996.

DI210 Development 0.5

Specific case studies relating to such topics as health, community development, capital, marketing, education, service supports, state and non-government aid will be investigated with the application of development related theories.

Prerequisite: DI100 or permission of the co-ordinator.

DI300 Development and International Studies Fieldwork 0.5

Formal placement in a development context or work with an international non-governmental organization involved in solidarity work or with a government agency involved in international development work. Course credit requires placement supervision and an appropriate term evaluation exercise.

Prerequisite: DI210.

DI310* Field Course in Development and International Studies 1.0

Field experience in a development context formally on site.

Prerequisite: Permission of the Co-ordinating Committee.

DI400 Seminar on Development 0.5

The factors surrounding the internal and external strains on developing nations or peoples are examined. Issues arising from social, economic, political and environmental interconnections and mutual dependencies will be considered, among which are political and cultural change, production, marketing and debt. Specific regions will be investigated according to the expertise of the instructor and interests of the students. Appropriate case studies and theories will be critiqued.

Prerequisite: AN337/DI337, or permission of the Co-ordinating Committee.
