Spanish Courses

Note: By agreement, students at WLU and U of W can be expected to take courses in Spanish at either university. While most language courses are taught concurrently every year at both universities, most other courses are taught either at one university or the other, and a few courses may rotate from year to year. Consult the undergraduate officer in Spanish. Before graduation, students must complete the requirements of their home university and faculty.

SP100* Introduction to Spanish 1.0

An introduction to the phonological system of the language, for students with little or no knowledge of Spanish. Emphasis will be placed on basic grammar, practical vocabulary and development of verbal and written communication skills. (U of W - Sp. 101 and Sp. 102)

SP101 Introduction to Spanish I F 0.5

SP111 Conversational Spanish 0.5

Intensive oral and aural training with particular emphasis on comprehension and speaking. Intended for students with no knowledge of Spanish. Limited to a maximum of 20 students. (U of W - Sp. 111)

SP201 Intermediate Spanish I F 0.5

For students with some knowledge of Spanish. Seeks to reinforce the language, both oral and written, through selections from literary works and grammar review. Language laboratory may be used to increase understanding and speaking skills. (U of W - Sp. 201A)

SP217 Latin American Civilization I F 0.5

A survey of the history of the former Spanish possessions in America, from the earliest times to the present, with emphasis on pre-Columbian cultures in Mexico and the Andean area. The role of women in Spanish America is also considered. Taught in English. (U of W - Sp. 217)

SP218 Latin American Civilization II W 0.5

A survey of the art, literature and music of Spanish America, with emphasis on pre-Columbian and modern Mexican art. Taught in English. (U of W - Sp. 218)

SP221 The Civilization of Mexico 0.5

A survey of Mexican civilization from the Aztecs to the present. Topics will include: history and politics, social and economic issues, architecture, literature and music. Taught in English. (U of W - Sp. 221)

SP222 Spanish Civilization and Culture I 0.5

This course will trace Spain's cultural history from prehistoric times through the 18th century. The survey includes the study of political, economic and religious aspects of Spain's cultural heritage together with an examination of representative works of art, architecture and literature. (U of W - Sp. 222)

Prerequisite: SP202 or permission of the department

SP223 Spanish Civilization and Culture II 0.5

This course will trace Spain's cultural history from the 19th century to today. The survey includes the study of political, economic and religious aspects of Spain's cultural heritage, together with an examination of representative works of art, architecture and literature.

A survey of literary trends and most significant works from the Conquest to the 19th century. (U of W - Sp. 227)

SP261 Spanish for Business I 0.5

Intensive study of the Spanish language for business, emphasizing vocabulary development, grammar and syntax. The focus is on the strengthening of written and verbal (both oral and aural) communication skills using diverse multimedia resources. Newspapers, magazines and business documents will be studied.

Prerequisite: SP202 or permission of the department.

SP305 The Spanish Realist Novel W 0.5

Study of the fundamental narrative techniques and ideology in some of the most representative realist novels of the 19th century. (U of W - Sp. 305)†

SP322 The Generation of '98: Fiction 0.5

A study of selected works by Valle-Inclán, Azorin, Baroja and Unamuno. (U of W - Sp. 322)††

SP324 Thematic Trends in 20th-Century Spanish Theatre 0.5

An examination of recurrent themes in Spanish drama of the 20th century, including freedom, exile, dehumanization, feminism and disintegration of the family. (U of W - Sp. 324)†

SP325 Contemporary Spanish Literature and Culture 0.5

This course will sensitize students to current social problems in Spain through the analysis of literature, art and music. Particular attention will be given to novels that cover topics such as corruption, drug addiction, terrorism and abortion. (U of W - Sp. 325)†

SP326 The Spanish Golden Age: Theatre and Poetry 0.5

A study of one verse drama from each of Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina and Calderón de la Barca; as well as outstanding sonnets of the period by Garcilaso, Herrera, Góngora, Lope and Quevedo. (U of W - Sp. 326)††

SP327 Golden Age Spanish Literature and Culture 0.5

A general introduction to Spanish literature of the Golden Age in its historical and cultural background. Representative works will be analyzed with special emphasis on the study of Don Quijote. (U of W - Sp. 327)†

SP328 Theatre of the Spanish Exile 0.5

The Spanish Civil War created a mass exodus of Spanish intellectuals. This course will consider the dynamic exile theatre of various authors, some of who were already famous for their novels or poetry. (U of W - Sp. 328)

SP333 Modern Latin American Poetry 0.5

A study in depth of major poets and movements since Modernism. (U of W - Sp. 333)

SP334 Modern Latin American Prose 0.5

A critical study of masterpieces in prose from Sarmiento to the present. (U of W - Sp. 334)

SP351 Spanish Communication Skills III F 0.5

Further practice in verbal communication and written correspondence to increase mastery of vocabulary, grammar and syntax. Journalistic materials with cultural, literary and business relevance will be used to broaden students' sensitivity to modern-day, intercultural communication. (U of W - Sp. 351A)†

SP361 Advanced Spanish for Business I 0.5

Further practice in verbal and written communication to increase mastery of vocabulary. Assigned texts will serve as points of departure for a series of debates oriented toward the discussion of international business as practiced in, and with, the Spanish-speaking world.

SP362 Advanced Spanish for Business II 0.5

This course will provide students with the practical skills necessary to interact in the Spanish-speaking business world. Group projects and presentations are an intrinsic part of the course. (U of W - Sp. 362)

SP365 Spanish Identity Through Literature 0.5

This course will study a selection of short stories by contemporary Spanish writers. Through analysis and in-depth criticism of the works, students will reach a better knowledge of the self and others. Emphasis will be given to studying women writers. (U of W - Sp. 365)

A study of the most important dramatists of continental Spanish America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. (U of W - Sp. 388)

SP390 Introduction to Business Translation 0.5

This course is designed for students enrolled in their third year of the General or Honours program in Spanish. A strong command of Spanish and English is required. Intense concentration on the Spanish language through oral and written work will focus on business-oriented fundamentals of communication, such as letter writing, as well as the translation of primary source materials such as newspapers and business documents. SP438 Special Topics 0.5

This course focuses on a specific topic or question in Hispanic studies.

Introduction to the origins and development from pre-Roman substrata through vulgar Latin to old Spanish and thence to modern Spanish. Basic sound and grammatical changes along with word order and vocabulary. (U of W - Sp. 445)††

SP446 Love in Medieval Spanish Literature 0.5

An introduction to medieval Spanish poetry and prose, focusing on an exploration of the theme of love in various works of the period. The historical context within which these texts were produced will be examined, and the various methods of literary analysis applied to them by successive generations will be considered. SP451 Applied Spanish Stylistics I 0.5

A workshop-type course designed to develop advanced oral-aural skills, consecutive translation and composition. Written and oral translation of journalistic material will be included, and students are advised that frequent class presentations are required. (U of W - Sp. 451)

SP452 Applied Spanish Stylistics II 0.5
