GM101 Introductory German I 0.5

An introduction to the basic elements of German grammar for students with no knowledge of the language. Emphasis on group and individual practice to develop skills in word comprehension and both verbal and written communication. Aspects of German culture and everyday life are considered.

Exclusion: Any prior knowledge of German.

GM102 Introductory German II 0.5

Building on student's knowledge of basic German, this course provides further insight into grammatical structures and more in-depth communication skills.

Prerequisite: GM101 or equivalent.
Exclusion: GM100*.

GM200 Intermediate German I 0.5

A practical review of vocabulary and communication skills. Readings and audio-visual materials will be drawn from contemporary German culture.

Prerequisite: GM100* or GM102, or OAC German, or permission of the department.

GM201 Intermediate German II 0.5

A practical review of vocabulary and communication skills. Readings and audio-visual materials will be drawn from contemporary German culture.

Prerequisite: GM200, or permission of the department.

GM202 Language Skills Clinic I 0.5

A workshop using contemporary cultural materials to improve oral and written expression in specific contexts. (Note: Students whose program requirements include GM202 are advised to register in this course concurrently with GM200 or GM201.)

Prerequisite: GM102, OAC German, or permission of the department.

GM230 German Cultural Studies 0.5

An introduction to the discipline of cultural studies by examining cultural forms in the German-speaking areas of Central Europe. Students will participate in an interdisciplinary study of some of the major artistic, social, intellectual and religious movements since the Reformation.

Prerequisite: GM201, or permission of the department.

GM260 Introduction to Literary Genres 0.5

Through representative readings from the three main genres (prose, poetry and drama), this course offers an introduction to some basic principles of analyzing and interpreting literature.

Prerequisite: GM201, or permission of the department.

GM270 Practical Translation I 0.5

An introduction to the techniques of translation to and from the target language. Materials will be drawn from a range of disciplines and presented through various audio-visual media. The course will focus on practical translation skills.

Prerequisite: GM201, or permission of the department.

GM302 Language Skills Clinic II 0.5

A workshop using contemporary cultural materials to improve oral and written expression in specific contexts. (Note: Students whose program requirements include GM302 are advised to register in this course concurrently with GM305 or GM306.)

Prerequisite: GM202.

GM305 German for Special Purposes I F 0.5

Practice in formal business correspondence/communication, conversation on selected topics, vocabulary building and review of the fundamentals of German grammar. The course includes a cross-cultural component designed to sensitize the learner to differing values and cultures especially as it impacts the area of business and economics.

Prerequisite: GM201, or permission of the department.

GM330 Special Topics in German Cultural Studies 0.5

This course focuses on a specific topic or question in German cultural studies.

Prerequisite: GM201, or permission of the department.

GM340 Representations of the Holocaust 0.5

This course examines some of the major works of art and literature that focus on the treatment of Jews during the Third Reich. Themes studied will include the problem of the aestheticization of inhuman atrocities, survivor guilt, the persecution of identity and the role of art in mourning. (Note: This course is taught in English, and students registered in Honours or General German are required to attend a weekly tutorial held in German.)

Prerequisite: Registration status: senior student, or permission of the department.

GM350 Contemporary German Cultural Expression 0.5

A course designed to introduce students to the issues and forms of contemporary cultural expression in German-speaking countries. Creative texts, film and artistic cultural life will be examined.

Prerequisite: GM201, or permission of the department.

GM355 Directed Studies 0.5

Detailed study of an author or area under the supervision of faculty in the department.

GM360 Masterworks of German Literature 0.5

An introduction to some of the most important periods and authors of German Literature.

Prerequisite: GM201, or permission of the department.

GM370 Social Currents in German Literature and Culture 0.5

A study of social trends (including anti-feudal and anti-clerical satire, emancipatory and egalitarian demands and socialist tendencies) expressed in selected writings from medieval to modern times.

Prerequisite: GM201, or permission of the department.

GM380 War and Totalitarianism in German Literature and Culture 0.5

The treatment of war in German literature and culture from early modern times to the present.

Prerequisite: GM201, or permission of the department.

GM402 Language Skills Clinic III 0.5

A workshop using contemporary cultural materials to improve oral and written expression in specific contexts. (Note: Students whose program requirements include GM402 are advised to register in this course concurrently with GM405 or GM406.)

Prerequisite: GM302.

GM405 German for Special Purposes III F 0.5

Verbal and written communication skills are further developed, with an emphasis on modern business and everyday vocabulary as well as business correspondence.

Prerequisite: GM306, or permission of the department.
Exclusion: GM313.

GM460 Women's Artistic Identity 0.5

A study of German women authors, artists and filmmakers. Attention will be paid to a variety of genres and social concerns. German feminist history and literary theory will also be examined. (Note: This course is taught in English, and students registered in Honours or General German are required to attend a weekly tutorial held in German.)

GM470 America in German Life and Letters 0.5

A study of the German image of the New World, with some attention given to the German contribution to the building of the Americas.

Prerequisite: GM201, or permission of the department.

GM480 Goethe and His Time 0.5

Selected readings from the Goethezeit (1749-1832), one of the richest in German cultural history.

Prerequisite: GM201, or permission of the department.
