MU115 Basic Materials in Music Theory I 0.5

An introduction to music notation, terminology and concepts of music theory; ear-training and sight-singing.

Prerequisite: None.
Exclusion: Honours Music programs; OAC Music, or equivalent, except with permission of the dean.

MU118 Introduction to the Structure of Music I 0.5

An introduction to various aspects of musical structure, such as phrase structure, expectation in music and musical form. The course is designed to develop listening skills and introduce analytical methods, focusing predominantly on Western art music.

Prerequisite: MU115 or equivalent.
Exclusion: Honours Music programs.

MU122 Music Appreciation: Baroque and Classical F 0.5

A study of selected compositions of Western classical music from the Baroque and Classical eras, with emphasis on the development of listening skills and a vocabulary for the discussion of music.

Prerequisite: None.
Exclusion: Honours Music programs.

MU218 Introduction to the Structure of Music II 0.5

A continuation of MU118. The course deals with aspects of musical structure such as rhythm and texture, as well as aesthetic issues including representation and expression. It is designed to develop listening skills and analytical methods, focusing predominantly on Western art music.

Prerequisite: MU118.
Exclusion: Honours Music programs.

MU224 Music of the 19th and 20th Centuries W 0.5

An introduction to music history through study of selected compositions of Western art music from 1800 to the present.

Prerequisite: MU118 or MU122, or permission of the dean.
Exclusion: MU123, MU222, Honours Music programs.

MU250* Seminar in Secondary Music Education 1.0

Study of the history and philosophy of music education; current research techniques and materials related to Secondary school music.

Prerequisite: Admission to second year of a music program, or both MU218 and MU224.

MU251T Music and New Technology F 0.5

An introduction to the newer technological instruments and the effects of this technology on the field of music. High-fidelity systems, tape recorders, microphones, synthesizers, and examples of computer music hardware and software will be studied from both theoretical and practical points of view.

Prerequisite: Registration in a music program or permission of the dean of the Faculty of Music.

MU275 Music of the World 0.5

An introduction to the musical cultures of the world. The course will focus on the relations between music and society.†

MU354 Psychology of Music F 0.5

The study of such topics as the perception of pitch, timbre, rhythm, tempo, scales and tuning and melodic processes; the listener and the acoustic environment; the nature and measurement of musical preference and musical abilities; neurological aspects of music perception and performance; the communicative aspects of music.†

Prerequisite: MU115 or equivalent, PS100*, permission of the dean.

MU377 Studies in Music Aesthetics and Criticism 0.5
Prerequisite: MU268, MU271 (or permission of the dean).††

MU379 Studies in Canadian Music 0.5
Prerequisite: MU268, MU271, or both MU218 and MU224.††

MU462 Music since 1945 W 0.5

A survey of musical styles in the avant-garde tradition of music written in the latter part of this century. The course will include a general introduction to the many musical styles which have arisen in this period and some detailed analysis of these styles.

Prerequisite: MU268, or both MU218 and MU224.

Several other music courses, including special topics courses, may be available to students in other faculties. Consult the Faculty of Music. As a rule, only students registered in the Faculty of Music may take practical study courses. However, students in other faculties who audition successfully for the WLU Orchestra or Wind Ensemble may also register for practical study in their instrument, studio space permitting.
