OL140 Historical Profiles of Leadership 0.5

Using biographical and autobiographical sources, this course analyzes exemplars – both positive and negative – of leadership throughout the ages.

OL160 Organizations and Social Change 0.5

This course will discuss the ongoing social, economic and political changes affecting organizations from different sectors. Topics may include the work force of the future, and the ways in which leaders may adapt to different kinds of social change.

OL221 Applied Scientific Reasoning 0.5

OL233 Social Science Research Methods I 0.5

An examination of the basic methods that most organizations use to collect data from, and about, people and their environment. Topics include social surveys, interviews, focus groups, and archival and historical techniques of data collection. (Cross-listed as CC233.)

Prerequisite: CT221 and two 100 level CT courses.

OL234 Social Science Research Methods II 0.5

An extension of CC233/OL233, this course focuses primarily on survey design and analysis as the most prevalent technique in organizational research. Topics will include question design, probability and non-probability sampling techniques, pre-testing, survey implementation, data entry and analysis. (Cross-listed as CC234.)

Prerequisite: CC233/OL233.

OL250 The Legal Context of Organizations 0.5

The course will discuss the ways in which organizations are influenced by their legal context. Topics may include incorporation, liability, and ethics and the law. The process of incorporation will be examined.

Prerequisite: Two 100 level CT courses.

OL265 Forms of Economic Organization 0.5

An examination of different ways of organizing economic activity. The course will consider both the ways in which organizations themselves may be organized from an economic point of view, and the broader economic strictures in which they operate. Forms of economic organization considered may include the different variants of capitalism, socialism, communism, feudalism, slavery, agrarianism and mercantilism; the connections between these different forms; and the kinds of leadership that characterize them.

Prerequisite: Two 100 level CT courses.

OL270 Occupations and Professions 0.5

An examination of the role that occupations and professions play within organizations, and the ways in which organizations interact with occupations and professions. Topics may include the development of the professions, professional knowledge, occupational mobility and change, conflicts between professions, professional employees versus non-professional employees, and leadership within professional and commercial organizations.

Prerequisite: Two 100 level CT courses.

OL310 Organizational Strategy 0.5

Most projects in organizations attempt to solve problems and/or leverage opportunities. Strategic planning and project management are, therefore, fundamental cornerstones of the work of effective organizations. Topics in this course may include: strategic analysis; goal setting, mission and vision statements; action planning; planning models; social complexity and social networks, and problem-solving processes.

Prerequisite: OL233 and one other 200 level OL course.

OL311 Teams in Organizations 0.5

Teamwork has emerged as a powerful tool for solving the multi-faceted and interdisciplinary problems that organizations face today. This course explores the theory and application of principles that result in effective teamwork. Topics may include hierarchy in organizations, formal and informal teams, collaboration strategies, effective teamwork, communities of practice.

Prerequisite: OL233 and one other 200 level OL course.

OL312 Human Aspects of Organizations 0.5

The human resource function is fundamental to understanding and optimizing organizational performance. This course studies the organization from the perspective of its most critical component – the people within. Topics may include personality typing and its uses, "emotional intelligence", recruitment and retention issues and strategies, styles and contexts of communication, conflict resolution, and performance management and evaluation (team and individual).

Prerequisite: OL233 and one other 200 level OL course.

OL320 Leaders and Organizations; Contemporary Case Studies 0.5

This course is a companion course to OL140. The focus in this course, however, is on contemporary organizations and their leaders.

Prerequisite: Two 200 level OL courses.

OL330 The Political Philosophy of Leadership 0.5

This course surveys selected authors and classical and contemporary theories that lie behind various definitions of what constitutes successful leadership.

Prerequisite: Two 200 level OL courses.

OL340 Leadership, Organizational Culture and Change 0.5

This course explores the connections between leadership, organizational culture and the possibilities of organizational change. Topics may include definitions of organizational culture, strategies for managing organizational cultures, subcultural development, cultural effects and cultural change. Examples of organizational cultures will be used to explore these issues.

Prerequisite: OL233 and one other 200 level OL course.

OL350 Intercultural Communication 0.5

This course will examine communication issues in a culturally diverse environment. Questions of culture and their impact in both organizational structure and governance will be explored. Understanding diversity in a broad way that encompasses differences in gender, class, ethnicity and culture, this course will focus on the ways in which a knowledge of diversity and intercultural communication helps leaders to develop the potential of individuals in organizations.

Prerequisite: Two 200 level OL courses.

OL360 Understanding International Organizations 0.5

This course will examine major international organizations and the important role they play in the global political and economic landscape.

Prerequisite: Two 200 level OL courses.

OL365 Influence, Persuasion and Negotiation 0.5

This course examines how influence, persuasion and negotiation operate, and the ways in which leaders and others may successfully use these tools to appropriately frame problems and resolve them. Topics may include contract negotiation, rhetoric, metaphor, argument, audience, jargon, contrast, "spin" and storytelling.

Prerequisite: Two 200 level OL courses.

OL370 Power and Governance in Organizations 0.5

This course will focus on the legal, regulatory and policy frameworks of organizations. It will help students understand the ways in which different organizations may be governed and the way in which an organization's governance may affect its performance.

Prerequisite: Two 200 level OL courses.

OL400 Ethics and Organizational Responsibility 0.5

An examination of the role of ethics, moral principles and codes in organizations. Topics may include scandals and wrongdoing, the relations between ethical responsibilities and other responsibilities, the role of the leader in ethical responsibility, and individual and collective responsibility.

Prerequisite: Two 300 level OL courses.

OL410 Co-operative Organizations 0.5

This course will discuss and examine the principles of co-operative organizations. Topics may include the difference between co-operatives and other types of organizations, the different forms of co-operatives, and the role of co-operatives in the economy.

Prerequisite: Two 300 level OL courses.

OL420 Non-Governmental Organizations 0.5

An examination of the different types of non-governmental organizations. This course will discuss the perspectives of managers, volunteers, board members, policy-makers, donors and clients.

Prerequisite: Two 300 level OL courses.

OL430 Advanced Topics in Organizational Leadership 0.5

This course will address, at an advanced level, selected topics in organizational leadership.

Prerequisite: OL233 and two 300 level OL courses.
Irregular course

OL480* Project Management Practicum 1.0

This course will focus on project development, co-ordination and management. The practicum will include a supervised work experience. Evaluation in the course will include an assessment by the placement organization and a classroom component.
