Policy Concerning Unclassified Studies, Program Withdrawal and Re-audition

Students whose cumulative music GPA is below the level for progression (6.0 to progress into Year 2 and 7.0 to progress into Year 3 and Year 4 and to graduate) by no more than 2.0 grade points will be placed in Unclassified Studies (hereafter noted as: U/S).

  1. Students may be registered in U/S for a maximum of two consecutive years.
  2. All students in their first year of U/S will be entitled to half-hour lessons, regardless of ensemble placement, provided that their studio grade for the previous year is at least a C.
  3. In no circumstance will students who remain in U/S for a second consecutive year receive any studio lessons.
  4. Students who, at the end of the second year of U/S, have a GPA sufficient for readmission to the honours program must re-audition. (NOTE: This does not apply to students who have been required to withdraw from the program; refer to regulation #9 below.)
  5. Failure to satisfy all of the readmission requirements to the honours program (e.g., music GPA, required courses, re-audition if required according to regulation #4) by the end of the winter term of their second year in U/S must withdraw from the music program (see regulation #9 below).
  6. Students in U/S will receive a letter from the dean, outlining which music performance and academic courses are available to them and the conditions by which they may be taken. It is not the case that students in U/S may take any and all music courses intended primarily for Honours BMus students for which they have the prerequisites; these allowances will be made at the discretion of the dean, in part on the basis of availability of space in the courses in question.
  7. Under no circumstances will students who are placed in U/S for a second time (after having been re-admitted to the honours program) receive any studio lessons.
  8. Students whose music GPA is below the level for progression (6.0 to progress into Year 2 and 7.0 to progress into Year 3 and Year 4 and to graduate) by more than 2.0 grade points must withdraw from the program.
  9. Students who have been required to withdraw may not re-audition for at least one year (that is, students who have been required to withdraw at the end of winter term may not re-audition that fall). With a successful re-audition, specific academic conditions will be determined and communicated to the student; these conditions may require a year of academic work before any studio lessons commence. Students who have been required to withdraw from the program may re-audition only once.
