General BSc Physics Program Revision:
The General Physics Major consists of: PC100* (or PC110* with the approval of the Department), PC200º, PC201º, PC210, PC211,
PC237, PC321, PC322, PC481, and one half-credit senior Physics elective.
Note: MA200 (or MA201) and MA205 must also be completed. Students with a second major or a minor in Mathematics may count MA200 (or MA201) and MA205 toward this major or minor. (Refer to pages 53-55 and 57 of the 1996-1998 Undergraduate Calendar for further program requirements.)

Physics Minor Program Revision:
The Physics minor consists of: PC100* (or PC110* with approval of the Department); PC210, PC211 and another senior credit in Physics.

Course Addition:

PC237 Optics 0.5

Nature of light: Huygen's principle, Fermat's principle. Geometrical optics: reflection and refraction at plane and curved surfaces, lenses and lens systems. Wave optics: interference, diffraction, polarization.

Prerequisite: PC100*.
Exclusions: PC230, PC231.

PC100 Foundations of Physics 1.0

An introduction to mechanics and the laws of motion; energy and momentum conservation; hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, waves, relativity theory.

Prerequisite: OAC Physics.
Co-requisite: MA101, MA102, (or MA100*).
Exclusion: PC110*.
3 lecture hours, 1 tutorial hour, 2 lab. hours

PC210 Introductory Electricity 0.5

Electrostatics including Gauss' law, electric potential, capacitance. Introductory DC circuit theory.

Prerequisite: PC100*, MA101 and MA102 (or MA100*).

PC360 Electromagnetic Theory 0.5

Maxwell's equations, plane wave theory of waveguides, radiating systems.

Prerequisite: PC211, PC237.

PC481 Fibre Optics 0.5

Types of fibres. Basic theory: characteristics, numerical aperture, losses, dispersion, modes. Passive fibre devices: couplers, connectors, splices. Light sources: LED, solid and semiconductor lasers. Modulators. Detectors. Systems design.

Prerequisite: PC237, PC322.

PC482 Modern Optics 0.5

Fresnel reflections and refraction equations. Fourier optics. Polarization. Spontaneous and stimulated emission. Resonators. Lasers. Properties and application of laser radiation.††

Prerequisite: PC237, PC360
