KP101 through KP118, KP207 and KP212 are quarter-credit (0.25) courses of a half-term duration and consist of two lecture hours and two lab hours. As an introductory course in a specific sports activity, each will provide the fundamental skills, techniques and principles, and, where applicable, the rules and regulations of that activity.

KP121 Socio-Cultural Aspects of Physical Activity 0.5

An examination of the historical, philosophical, sociological and psychological dimensions of physical education. Topics include the history of physical education in Canada, ethics and values in sport, motivation and motor performance, and socialization into and through sport.

Prerequisite: Registration in the Kinesiology and Physical Education program (or permission of the Department).

KP122 Bio-Dynamic Aspects of Physical Activity 0.5

An examination of the physiological, biomechanical and health related dimensions of physical education. Topics include drugs and athletic performance, the efficiency of human movement, physical activity and physical health.

An advanced course in aquatics which includes preparation for the Bronze Medallion certification.

KP211 Sociology of Physical Activity 0.5

Sport as an institution in North American society from a sociological perspective. The focus is on a more complete understanding of the role that sport plays in contemporary society with reference to participation in sport activity according to gender, social class, age, and ethnic group. Social change with sport as an agent of change is also studied. (Cross-listed as SY211).

The fundamentals of fitness class leadership, organization and planning. (Students successfully completing this course will receive acknowledgment of having participated in the Fitness Ontario Leadership Program (F.O.L.P.) - the Basics.)

An examination of human anatomy with special emphasis on the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. A regional approach to the study of human anatomy will be utilized.

An introduction to contemporary health problems pertinent to the school situation. Areas covered include drugs, alcohol, tobacco, nutrition and the recognition of common health disorders. Selected topics will be covered by experts in the various fields.

A study of selected health topics. Areas discussed include environmental health, family life education, disease, consumer health and the relationship between physical activity and longevity. Selected topics will be covered by experts in the various fields.

An examination of selected historical periods and philosophies in relation to the development of physical education from pre-Christian Greece to modern times.

An examination of the theory and practice of the administrative process in relation to physical education and sport-related programs.

The methods used in the collection and analysis of data including such topics as research design, sampling, experiments, surveys, reliability and validity.

The study of the effects of physical activity on the muscular, circulatory and respiratory systems, with particular emphasis on the aerobic and anaerobic energy systems.

An examination of the stages of human growth and development, with particular attention to motor development.

KP324 Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription 0.5

A lecture, laboratory and field course on the art and science of fitness assessment, exercise testing and prescription. Areas covered include needs-based planning, pre-test screening, data collection and interpretation, counselling, behaviour modification and exercise prescription for special populations.

KP332 Human Nutrition in Exercise and Health 0.5

An examination of the nutritional aspects of exercise and health from a metabolic, macro-nutrient and micro-nutrient perspective. Emphasis will be placed on understanding metabolic, bio-energetic and body composition-related issues.

An examination of the pathophysiology of, and the anatomical and functional limitations that arise in relation to, a variety of acute, chronic or congenital disabilities. Emphasis will be placed on modifying physical activity and sport programs to meet the physical, affective, and intellectual needs of the participants.

KP410 Advanced Psychology of Physical Activity 0.5

A study of the psychological variables affecting the individual within the context of sport and physical activity. Possible topics include: personality, arousal, cognition, attribution, attitudes, perception, control, goal setting, aggression, social facilitation and group dynamics.

KP411 Advanced Sociology of Physical Activity 0.5

An in-depth examination of selected topics in the sociology of sport which could include sport and gender, sport and deviance, and sport in Canadian society.

A multi-disciplinary examination of sport participation among children.

An advanced seminar focussing on the assessment and primary care of athletic injuries.

KP431 Aging, Physical Activity and Health 0.5

An examination of the associations between aging and physical activity. Topics include the effect of physical activity on the aging process, the impact of aging processes on health and fitness, and other health related issues such as medication use and co-morbidity.

KP441 The Modern Olympic Games 0.5

A study of the historical development of the modern Olympic Games. Areas covered include politics, nationalism, commercialism, marketing and amateurism. The contributions of athletes and administrators who have helped to shape Olympic tradition will be assessed.

KP451 Advanced Biomechanics 0.5

An in-depth investigation of the mechanical behaviour of human tissue under loading. The implications of such behaviours for joint and structural stability will be examined, as will the topic of occupational biomechanics.

KP490 Thesis 1.0

Directed study or research on a topic appropriate to the student's specialization, under the supervision of a faculty member.

Prerequisite: Registration status: Fourth Year Honours Kinesiology and Physical Education, a cumulative GPA of 9.00 in the senior courses in KP, and permission of the Department.
