CT100* The World in the 20th Century 1.0

A multi-disciplinary course, which examines selected themes in the twentieth century experience.

2 lecture hours, 1 tutorial hour

CT110* Regional Ecosystems: Issues and Responses 1.0

A multi-disciplinary examination of a regional ecosystem, with emphasis on the integration of several disciplinary approaches to the study of the dynamic features of such a system over time.

2 lecture hours, 1 tutorial hour

CT200* Science and its Critics 1.0

An examination of the form and content of examples of the application of the scientific method as well as various challenges to the status of science as the dominant, rational and objective form of enquiry.

Prerequisite or co-requisite: CT100* or CT110*.

CT210* Indigenous Peoples in Contemporary Societies 1.0

The course examines the survival of indigenous peoples in the contemporary world. The impact of European colonization on indigenous peoples and contemporary relationships between indigenous peoples and modern states will be addressed using case studies from around the world. Indigenous cultures in a post-colonial world will be explored, with a focus on contemporary Native American art, music and literature.

Prerequisite or co-requisite: CT100* or CT110*.

CT320* Culture and Representation (Planned for 2001-2002) 1.0

An introduction to the study of culture and communication exploring the issues involved in understanding the aesthetic, cultural and historical context of texts, visual imagery, media representation, mass communication and personal interaction.

CT330* Independent Studies 1.0

This course offers students the opportunity to explore selected topics growing out of the Contemporary Studies core curriculum. All students will discuss their topics and approaches to these topics as members of a tutorial group which meets weekly. Students may choose to prepare an extended conventional essay, a series of shorter essays, reports, short stories, video documentaries or other creative means of assessment, developed in consultation with the tutorial group leader.
