Kinesiology and Physical Education Courses

KP101 through KP118, KP207 and KP212 are quarter-credit (0.25) courses of a half-term duration. Each course consists of a total of four hours per week in the form of lectures, labs, and practical experience. As an introductory course in a specific sports activity, each will provide the fundamental skills, techniques and principles, and, where applicable, the rules and regulations of that activity.

This course examines the basic climbing techniques and methods of scaling a simulated rock face, including instruction in the appropriate belay and safety measures and techniques.

KP121 Socio-Cultural Aspects of Physical Activity 0.5

An examination of the historical, philosophical, sociological and psychological dimensions of physical activity. Topics include the history of physical education in Canada, ethics and values in sport, motivation and motor performance, and socialization into and through sport.

Prerequisite: Registration in the Kinesiology and Physical Education program (or permission of the department).

KP122 Biodynamic Aspects of Physical Activity 0.5

An examination of the physiological, biomechanical and health related dimensions of physical activity. Topics include drugs and athletic performance, the efficiency of human movement, physical activity and physical health.

Prerequisite: Registration in the Kinesiology and Physical Education program (or permission of the department).

An advanced course in aquatics which includes preparation for the Bronze Medallion certification.

KP210 Sport Psychology 0.5

KP211 Sociology of Physical Activity 0.5

Sport as an institution in North American society from a sociological perspective. The focus is on a more complete understanding of the role that sport plays in contemporary society with reference to participation in sport activity according to gender, social class, age, and ethnic group. Social change with sport as an agent of change is also studied. (Cross-listed as SY211).

KP212º Aerobics 0.25

The fundamentals of fitness class leadership, organization and planning. (Students successfully completing this course will receive acknowledgment of having participated in the Fitness Ontario Leadership Program (F.O.L.P.) - the Basics.)

An examination of human anatomy with special emphasis on the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. A regional approach to the study of human anatomy will be utilized.

KP231 Health I 0.5

An introduction to health issues pertinent to the individual and the community. Areas covered will include topics such as: defining health, the changing field of health, behaviour change, epidemiology, mental health, stress, physical fitness, drug use, alternative medicine, nutrition and alcohol.

KP232 Health II 0.5

A study of selected health topics such as: socio-economic status and health, smoking, cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic conditions, infectious diseases, sexuality, parenting and fertility, safety and health, aging and death and dying.

KP241 Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Physical Activity 0.5

An examination of selected historical periods and philosophies in relation to the development of physical education from pre-Christian Greece to modern times.

Prerequisite: KP121, KP122.

KP242 Organization and Administration in Physical Activity and Sport 0.5

An examination of the theory and practice of the administrative process in relation to physical education and sport-related programs.

Prerequisite: KP121, KP122.

KP261 Research Methods I 0.5

The methods used in the collection and analysis of data including such topics as research design, sampling, experiments, surveys, reliability and validity.

Prerequisite: KP121, KP122.

Fundamentals of data analysis and interpretation including descriptive and inferential statistics methods.

KP302º Theory of Coaching Rugby **NEW** 0.25

This course provides students with the opportunity to explore strategies for the two units of a rugby team (forwards and backs) with particular emphasis on lineouts, scrummaging, rucks, mauls, and ball handling. The students develop game plans, evaluate performance, examine modified forms of the game (seven a side) and become familiar with the laws of the game and issues pertaining to safety.

An examination of the mechanics of common sport related injuries as well as the prevention, care and rehabilitation of these injuries.

KP322 Physiology of Physical Activity 0.5

The study of the effects of acute and chronic physical activity and the metabolic, muscular, circulatory and respiratory systems from whole body and cellular physiological perspectives.

Prerequisite: KP220, KP223 (or equivalent).

KP323 Human Growth and Motor Development 0.5

An examination of the stages of human growth and development, with particular attention to motor development.

Prerequisite: KP220, KP223 (or equivalent).

KP324 Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription 0.5

A lecture, laboratory and field course on the art and science of fitness assessment, exercise testing and prescription. Areas covered include needs-based planning, pre-test screening, data collection and interpretation, counselling, behaviour modification and exercise prescription for special populations.

Prerequisite: KP322.

KP332 Human Nutrition in Exercise and Health 0.5

An examination of the nutritional aspects of exercise and health from a metabolic, macronutrient and micronutrient perspective. Emphasis will be placed on understanding metabolic, bio-energetic and body composition-related issues.

An analysis of the growth and development of amateur and professional sport in Canada from the early 17th century to the present.

The analysis of mechanical principles underlying human movement and the application of these principles.

KP361 Motor Learning and Control 0.5

An investigation of the processes underlying the acquisition, performance and retention of motor skills involved in everyday movements as well as sport. The question of how movements are produced differently as a function of practice and experience will also be examined.

KP371 Introduction to Adapted Physical Activity 0.5

An introductory course designed to stimulate critical awareness and understanding of physical activity and sport as it relates to people with disabilities in Canada. Emphasis will be placed on key theories, concepts and terminology associated with disability studies, as well as the role of adapted physical activities in meeting the needs of people with physical and developmental disabilities.

Prerequisite: KP220, KP223.

KP410 Advanced Psychology of Physical Activity 0.5

A study of the psychological variables affecting the individual within the context of sport and physical activity. Possible topics include: personality, arousal, cognition, attribution, attitudes, perception, control, goal setting, aggression, social facilitation and group dynamics.

Prerequisite: KP210 and registration status: Fourth Year of the Honours Kinesiology and Physical Education program (or permission of the department).

KP411 Advanced Sociology of Physical Activity 0.5

An in-depth examination of selected topics in the sociology of sport which could include sport and gender, sport and deviance, and sport in Canadian society. (Cross-listed as SY411.)

KP420 Sport and the Child 0.5

A multi-disciplinary examination of sport participation among children.

Prerequisite: KP323 and registration status: Fourth Year of the Honours Kinesiology and Physical Education program (or permission of the department).

KP421 Seminar in Athletic Injuries 0.5

An advanced seminar focussing on the assessment and primary care of athletic injuries.

KP422 Physiology of Exercise: Muscle, Metabolism and Cellular Physiology 0.5

An advanced study of current issues in cellular, metabolic and muscle physiology related issues in exercise. This course builds on the base of knowledge established in KP322 and branches into other applied aspects of exercise physiology.

Prerequisite: KP322 and registration status: Fourth Year of the Honours Kinesiology and Physical Education program (or permission of the department).

KP423 Human Cardio-Respiratory Response To Exercise **NEW** 0.5

This course provides in-depth coverage of the cardio-respiratory aspects of exercise physiology. Topics include central and peripheral regulation of the cardiovascular system during exercise, neural control of respiration, reflexes controlling airway, and lung and respiratory muscle function during exercise. The effects of whole body exercise training on the cardio-respiratory system including the effects of aging, and gender differences on cardio-respiratory responses to exercise will be discussed. Current theories, developments and controversies will be examined.

Prerequisite: KP220, KP322.

KP431 Aging, Physical Activity and Health 0.5

An examination of the associations between aging and physical activity. Topics include the effect of physical activity on the aging process, the impact of aging processes on health and fitness, and other health related issues such as medication use and co-morbidity.

Prerequisite: KP231, KP232, KP322.

KP441 The Modern Olympic Games 0.5

A study of the historical development of the modern Olympic Games. Areas covered include politics, nationalism, commercialism, marketing and amateurism. The contributions of athletes and administrators who have helped to shape Olympic tradition will be assessed.

KP451 Advanced Biomechanics 0.5

An in-depth investigation of the mechanical behaviour of human tissue under loading. The implications of such behaviours for joint and structural stability will be examined, as will the topic of occupational biomechanics.

Prerequisite: KP351 and registration status: Fourth Year of the Honours Kinesiology and Physical Education program (or permission of the department).

KP463 Human Motor and Perceptuomotor Disorders ***NEW*** 0.5

An examination of the etiology, epidemiology and neuropathology of various neuropsychological disorders, focusing primarily on motor disorders. The clinical assessment of the various disorders will also be discussed.

Prerequisite: KP361 or permission of the instructor.

KP471 Adapted Physical Activity for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities***NEW*** 0.5

This course will focus on adapted physical activity for children/youth with developmental disabilities with particular attention given to topics related to instruction and assessment. This course will combine theory and practice through lectures, class discussion and a 10-week practicum placement.

Prerequisite: KP323 and KP371, or permission of the instructor.

KP490* Thesis 1.0

Directed study or research on a topic appropriate to the student's specialization, under the supervision of a faculty member.

Prerequisite: Registration status: Fourth Year Honours Kinesiology and Physical Education, a cumulative GPA of 9.00 in the senior courses in KP, and permission of the department.
