GS100 Introduction to Global Studies 0.5

An interdisciplinary introduction to the contemporary world that focuses on global issues, challenges and concerns. Topics may include recent political, socio-economic and cultural trends, development, gender, the environment, wealth and poverty and ideology.

Exclusion: DI100 or DI200 taken prior to 1996.

GS210 Development 0.5

Specific case studies relating to such topics as health, community development, capital, marketing, education, service supports, state and non-government aid will be investigated with the application of development related theories.

Prerequisite: DI100 or GS100 or permission of the co-ordinator.
Exclusion: DI210.

GS220 Globalization and Social Identity 0.5

This course adopts a critical approach to globalization by examining its meanings, its causes, its current processes and practices, and its implications. Thus, it is a broadly based exploration of global cultures, ideas and values in our time. Students start by looking at the main theoretical approaches to globalization, the relevant empirical data, and the relative merits of various approaches. They will be presented with case studies of different historical and contemporary manifestations of world cultures and economies. Attention will be directed to the diverse intellectual and a cultural processes which societies adopt in identify formation, and the pressures the GS foundation course for this field.

Prerequisite: GS100.

GS230 War and Peace in Global Perspective 0.5

This course adopts a critical approach to peace and conflict on the global stage by examining the changing nature and understanding of warfare in the modern age. It considers the various approaches that have and are being undertaken to secure the peace over time. Students begin by looking at the main theoretical approaches to war and peace, including a consideration of two world wars, the Cold War, and present day wars. They also study how definitions of peace and peacekeeping have changed in recent times, and why even these remain in dispute. The course takes an interdisciplinary approach, as philosophical, religious, and cultural understandings of war, peace, and conflict will also be considered. Attention will be directed to the past and present of international relations. Students will be asked to think critically of Canada’s role in matters of war and peace.

Prerequisite: GS100.

GS300 Global Studies Fieldwork 0.5

Formal placement in a development context or work with an international non-governmental organization involved in solidarity work or with a government agency involved in international development work. Course credit requires placement supervision and an appropriate term evaluation exercise.

Prerequisite: DI210 or GS210.

GS310* Field Course in Global Studies 1.0

Field experience in a development context formally on site.

Prerequisite: Permission of the co-ordinating committee.

GS400 Seminar on Development 0.5

The factors surrounding the internal and external strains on developing nations or peoples are examined. Issues arising from social, economic, political and environmental interconnections and mutual dependencies will be considered, among which are political and cultural change, production, marketing and debt. Specific regions will be investigated according to the expertise of the instructor and interests of the students. Appropriate case studies and theories will be critiqued.

Prerequisite: DI337, AN337/GS337, or permission of the co-ordinating committee.
