HB101 Introductory Biblical Hebrew I 0.5

A beginning study of the fundamentals of the language, including the alphabet, Tiberian vowel system, grammar and syntax of Biblical narrative, and acquisition of a basic vocabulary and rudimentary reading skills. Students will learn to interpret and analyse simple selections of Biblical Hebrew, but are advised that achieving a minimal general reading competence in most cases requires successful completion of HB102 as well.

HB102 Introductory Biblical Hebrew II 0.5

A continuation of HB101. Most remaining fundamentals of grammar and syntax will be covered, the vocabulary base will be expanded, and students will read, interpret and analyse selected passages of Biblical narrative with the help of a lexicon.

Prerequisite: HB101 (or permission of the department).
Exclusion: RE140*.

HB201 Intermediate Biblical Hebrew 0.5

Reading and grammatical analysis of selected passages from the Hebrew Bible.

Prerequisite: HB102 (or permission of the department).
Exclusion: RE260.

HB202 Ancient Semitic Texts and Inscriptions 0.5

Reading and analysis of Iron Age inscriptions and ostraca in Hebrew or closely related Canaanite dialects, including the Siloam and Mesha inscriptions and the Lachish letters, plus a selection from the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Prerequisite: HB102 (or permission of the department).
Exclusion: RE261.
