Spanish Courses

Note: By agreement, students at WLU and U of W can be expected to take courses in Spanish at either university. While most language courses are taught concurrently every year at both universities, most other courses are taught at one university or the other, and a few courses may rotate from year to year. Consult the undergraduate officer in Spanish. Before graduation, students must complete the requirements of their home university and faculty.

SP100* Introduction to Spanish 1.0

An introduction to the phonological system of the language, for students with little or no knowledge of Spanish. Emphasis will be placed on basic grammar, practical vocabulary and development of verbal and written communication skills. (U of W - SPAN 101 and SPAN 102)

SP101 Introduction to Spanish I F 0.5

SP111 Conversational Spanish 0.5

Intensive oral and aural training with particular emphasis on comprehension and speaking. Intended for students with no knowledge of Spanish. Limited to a maximum of 20 students. (U of W - SPAN 111)

SP201 Intermediate Spanish I F 0.5

For students with some knowledge of Spanish. Seeks to reinforce the language, both oral and written, through selections from literary works and grammar review. Language laboratory may be used to increase understanding and speaking skills. (U of W - SPAN 201A)

SP217 Latin American Civilization I F 0.5

A survey of the geography, history and problems of Latin America from pre-Columbian times to the present. Taught in English. (U of W - SPAN 217)

SP218 Latin American Civilization II W 0.5

A survey of the literature, art and music of Latin America from pre-Columbian times to the present. Taught in English. (U of W - SPAN 218)

SP221 The Civilization of Mexico 0.5

A survey of Mexican civilization from the Aztecs to the present. Topics will include history and politics, social and economic issues, architecture, literature and music. Taught in English. (U of W - SPAN 221)

SP222 Spanish Civilization and Culture I 0.5

This course will trace Spain's cultural history from prehistoric times through the 18th century. The survey includes the study of political, economic and religious aspects of Spain's cultural heritage together with an examination of representative works of art, architecture and literature. (U of W - SPAN 222)

Prerequisite: SP202 or permission of the department

SP223 Spanish Civilization and Culture II 0.5

This course will trace Spain's cultural history from the 19th century to today. The survey includes the study of political, economic and religious aspects of Spain's cultural heritage, together with an examination of representative works of art, architecture and literature. (U of W - SPAN 223)

SP227 Survey of Latin American Literature I F 0.5

This course is an introduction to Latin American literature and will cover the most significant works from the conquest to the 19th century. The course also aims to introduce the student to literary analysis and, therefore, particular attention will be paid to the question of genre, terminology, literary movements and textual analysis. SP228 Survey of Latin American Literature II W 0.5

This course is a continuation of SP227 and will study the period beginning with Modernismo (c. 1880) to the present day. Works of such renowned authors as Neruda, Borges and García Márquez will form part of the material taught in this course. The approach will be similar to SP227 with special emphasis on textual analysis. (U of W - SPAN 228)

SP261 Spanish for Communication and Business I 0.5

Intensive study of the Spanish language for business, emphasizing vocabulary development, grammar and syntax. The focus is on the strengthening of written and verbal (both oral and aural) communication skills using diverse multimedia resources. Newspapers, magazines and business documents will be studied.

Prerequisite: SP202 or permission of the department.

A study of selected works by Valle-Inclán, Azorin, Baroja and Unamuno. (U of W - SPAN 322)††

SP324 Thematic Trends in 20th-Century Spanish Theatre 0.5

An examination of recurrent themes in Spanish drama of the 20th century, including freedom, exile, dehumanization, feminism and disintegration of the family. (U of W - SPAN 324)†

SP325 Contemporary Spanish Literature and Culture 0.5

This course will sensitize students to current social problems in Spain through the analysis of literature, art and music. Particular attention will be given to novels that cover topics such as corruption, drug addiction, terrorism and abortion. (U of W - SPAN 325)†

SP326 The Spanish Golden Age: Drama 0.5

A general introduction to literature in its historical and cultural background. A special study through the close analysis of representative works of the period. The plays will be studied from various points of view, including historical importance, themes and technique. (U of W - SPAN 326)††

SP327 Golden Age Spanish Literature and Culture 0.5

A general introduction to Spanish literature of the Golden Age in its historical and cultural background. Representative works will be analyzed with special emphasis on the study of Don Quijote. (U of W - SPAN 327)†

SP328 Theatre of the Spanish Exile 0.5

The Spanish Civil War created a mass exodus of Spanish intellectuals. This course will consider the dynamic exile theatre of various authors, some of who were already famous for their novels or poetry. (U of W - SPAN 328)

SP330 Literary Women in Early Modern Hispanic Culture 0.5

This course will examine works by and about women in early modern Hispanic culture (16th and 17th centuries), with particular attention to engagements with and subversions of patriarchal culture in theatre, prose and poetry. Authors to be discussed may include, among others, Santa Teresa de Avila, Sor Juana Inés de la cruz, María de Zayas and Ana Caro. Taught in English. (U of W - SPAN 330)

SP333 Modern Latin American Poetry 0.5

An in-depth study of major poets and movements from Modernism to Vanguardism, post-Vanguardism and Surrealism. Examples of the poets studied in this course are Rubén Darío, Ramón López Velarde, Gabriela Mistral, César Vallejo, Nicolás Guillén, Pablo Neruda, Octavio Paz, among others. (U of W - SPAN 333)

SP334 Modern Latin American Prose 0.5

An in-depth study of selected prose masterpieces from Sarmiento to the 1930s. The political, social, cultural and educational motifs will be analysed in detail. The question of the novel as a vehicle for social consciousness will also be studied. (U of W - SPAN 334)

SP335 Aesthetic Practices of Spanish and Latin American Filmmakers 0.5

The objective of this course is to provide students with the background to analyse and understand the rapid evolution/regression of Spanish and Latin American cultures in the 20th century. The movies presented will be studied in their social-historical context. A reading list based on a selection of pertinent literature on the course topics will provide the necessary background to understand the content of the films. This course will be offered in English. SP351 Advanced Composition and Conversation I F 0.5

Further practice in verbal communication and written correspondence to increase mastery of vocabulary, grammar and syntax. Journalistic materials with cultural, literary and business relevance will be used to broaden students' sensitivity to modern-day, intercultural communication. (U of W - SPAN 351A)†

SP361 Advanced Spanish for Communication and Business I 0.5

Further practice in verbal and written communication to increase mastery of vocabulary. Assigned texts will serve as points of departure for a series of debates oriented toward the discussion of international business as practiced in, and with, the Spanish-speaking world. (U of W - SPAN 361)

SP362 Advanced Spanish for Communication and Business II 0.5

This course will provide students with the practical skills necessary to interact in the Spanish-speaking business world. Group projects and presentations are an intrinsic part of the course. (U of W - SPAN 362)

SP365 Spanish Identity through Literature 0.5

This course will study a selection of short stories by contemporary Spanish writers. Through analysis and in-depth criticism of the works, students will reach a better knowledge of the self and others. Emphasis will be given to studying women writers. (U of W - SPAN 365)

SP366 The Latin American Short Story 0.5

A study of selected stories by Latin American writers. The chosen stories are part of a literature in which the themes of 'magical-realism', exile, national identity, history, metaphysical fantasy and social struggle never stop flourishing. Some of the authors studied in this course are Juan Rulfo, Jorge L. Borges, Carlos Fuentes, G. García Márquez and Isabel Allende. (U of W - SPAN 366)

SP387 Latin American Women Writers F 0.5

A study of selected works by women writers from Baroque to the 20th century. This course will focus on the artistic and literary quality of the selected material and on the analysis of valuable works that are not yet part of the traditional anthologies. Some of the authors studied are Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, Gabriela Mistral, María Luisa Bombal, Lydia Cabrera, Rosario Castellanos, Elena Garro, Luisa Valenzuela, Rosario Ferré, Elena Poniatowska and Isabel Allende. SP388 Contemporary Latin American Theatre 0.5

A study of the most important dramatists of Latin America. Particular attention will be paid to the political, historical, cultural and aesthetic contexts which inform the works studied. (U of W - SPAN 388)

SP390 Introduction to Business Translation 0.5

This course is designed for students enrolled in Year 3 of the General or Honours program in Spanish. A strong command of Spanish and English is required. Intense concentration on the Spanish language through oral and written work will focus on business-oriented fundamentals of communication, such as letter writing, as well as the translation of primary source materials such as newspapers and business documents. SP400 Latin American Testimonial Literature 0.5

A study of the emergence of testimonial discourse in Latin America in relation to the socio-political turmoil that has characterized Latin American life in the past decades. Contemporary fictional and non-fictional texts, as well as documentaries and movies, will be discussed in order to establish the grounds of testimonial discourse as a genre. (U of W - SPAN 400)

This course focuses on a specific topic or question in Hispanic studies.

SP445 History of the Spanish Language 0.5

Origin and development from pre-Roman times through vulgar Latin to old Spanish and thence to modern Spanish. Basic sound and grammatical changes as well as word order and vocabulary. (U of W - SPAN 445)††

SP446 Love in Medieval Spanish Literature 0.5

An introduction to medieval Spanish poetry and prose, focusing on an exploration of the theme of love in various works of the period. The historical context within which these texts were produced will be examined, and the various methods of literary analysis applied to them by successive generations will be considered. SP451 Applied Spanish Stylistics I 0.5

A workshop-type course designed to develop advanced oral-aural skills, consecutive translation and composition. Written and oral translation of journalistic material will be included, and students are advised that frequent class presentations are required. (U of W - SPAN 451)

SP452 Applied Spanish Stylistics II 0.5

SP490 Advanced Translation 0.5

This course is designed for students enrolled in Year 3 and Year 4 of the general and honours program in Spanish. Fluency in both Spanish and English is required. The objective of this course is to refine translation techniques in order to enable the student to reproduce an English text into accurate and idiomatic Spanish. Documents and texts selected for use include corporate and press materials, magazine articles and some literary abstracts. (U of W - SPAN 490)

Prerequisite: SP352 (or U of W - SPAN351B).

SP491 Staging the other Hispanic Theatre in Translation 0.5

Introduction, analysis and translation of some of the most representative playwrights in contemporary Latin America and Spain who have written brief theatre pieces known as "teatro breve" (one-act plays).

Prerequisite: SP262, SP326, SP388 or permission of the department.

SP495 The Novel in Mexico 0.5

This course will trace the development of the novel in Mexico through its most prominent and representative authors. Azuela's Los de abajo, Rulfo's Pedro Páramo and Fuentes' La muerte de Artemio Cruz will be analysed. (U of W - SPAN 495)

SP497 The Novel in Latin America 0.5

A study of the 20th-century novel and its development from the 1930s to the present through representative authors. While special attention will be paid to the individual works in the last half century, the individual works will be analysed for their value as the expression of social and historical reality.
