Honours English Language and Literature Program Revisions:
The Honours English Program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent). Not more than six of these may be at the 100 level. A minimum of 12 but not more than 14 credits in English are required. For students wishing to graduate with a degree in Honours English with the Theatre minor, the minimum number of credits required in English is 12, and the maximum number of credits in both English and Theatre courses is 15; for students wishing to graduate in Honours English with the Theatre major, the minimum number of credits required in English is 12, and the maximum number of credits in both English and Theatre courses is 17.

Required Courses:
EN122* (or, with permission of the Department, EN118 and EN130);
At least three of: EN272*, EN352*, EN453*, EN454*.
At least three of: EN256*, EN258* (or EN462*), EN355*, EN357*.
At least two of: EN218, EN265, EN266, EN267, EN269, of which at least one must be either EN267 or EN269.
A minimum of two credits distributed over two or more of the following lists:
(a) EN291, EN302, FS241, FS242, FS341
(b) EN211, EN212, EN225, EN325
(c) EN203, EN207, EN233, EN234, EN322, EN326
At least two but no more than four additional credits consisting of any English courses not already taken.

General BA English Program Revisions:
The major consists of EN122* and at least four senior credits in English including at least one half-credit from
EN200, EN203, EN207 and at least one half-credit from EN204, EN300, EN306; at most one senior credit may be chosen from among EN209, EN309, EN409, Theatre courses and Film Studies courses (excluding FS204, FS205).
Note: With permission of the Department, students may substitute EN118, EN130, (or one of these together with either EN104 or EN105), for EN122*; in such cases, at least one of the minimum four senior credits must include the study of pre-20th century English Literature.

Course Additions:

EN200 The Experience of Poetry 0.5

A study of selected forms of poetry such as the sonnet, lyric, ode, elegy, song, rap, ballad, monologue, and free verse.

EN210 Literature and Social Change 0.5

A study of the ways in which literature of various periods and nationalities functions to criticize its milieu. Emphasis will be placed on the specific socio-historic contexts and ideologies of the period in which the works were written.

EN222 Texts and Representations 0.5

A study of the influences and relationships between written/printed/literary texts and other media. Topics may include analysis of stage and film adaptations; television and video presentations; or paintings, photography, and other popular forms.

EN233 Shakespeare's Comedies and Romances: Gender and Genre 0.5

A study of the interconnections between gender and genre in selected plays drawn from all stages of Shakespeare's development as a dramatist.

Exclusion: EN232*, EN351.

EN234 Shakespeare's Tragedies and History Plays 0.5

A study of representative tragedies and history plays, with an emphasis on their dramatic, theatrical, and cultural contexts.

Exclusion: EN232*, EN351.

EN300 Narrative Forms 0.5

An examination of various forms of fictional and non-fictional prose narratives. Works may include autobiography, biography, contemporary films, travel narratives, diaries, romances or popular forms such as the detective novel and horror stories.

EN310 The Politics of Transgression and Desire 0.5

An examination of literary representations of physical, economic, social and political instabilities and upheavals. The course will consider ways in which transgressive acts against authority of the law serve to interrogate the boundaries between self and other, between a culture's desires and fears.

EN409 Special Topics 0.5

Consult the Department of English for current offerings.

Prerequisite: Registration in the Third or Fourth Year of any degree program.

A study of the main patterns of tragedy from its origins to the 20th century.†

EN207 Comic Drama 0.5

A study of the main patterns of comedy from its origins to the 20th century.†

EN231 Medieval Narrative and Multi-Media 0.5

The focus of this course is English medieval narrative with an emphasis on romance in the context of new technological developments important to students of English literature. Students examine selected medieval English texts within new multi-media environments, including CD-ROM databases, internet web sites, and computer analysis software. (No prior knowledge of medieval literature or computers is necessary.)†
