Being an Effective Online Learner

Funded by the Council of Ontario Universities

The Being an Effective Online Learner modules provide flexible, custom learning strategies and study skills development for students enrolled in online learning courses to support their success. The module is comprised of a series of interactive sub-modules which include videos, interactive activities, assessments, student guidebooks, and a faculty guidebook.

Learning Outcomes

Modules

Effective Independent Learning

Topics: Metacognition, motivation, concentration, eliminating distractions, self-regulation, and learning preferences.

Time Management

Topics: Understanding the syllabus, goal setting, scheduling study time, keeping on task, dealing with competing priorities, assignment and homework planning, and motivation.

Engaging Effectively with the Learning Materials: Readings, Lectures, and Beyond

Topics: Understanding the syllabus, goal setting, scheduling study time, keeping on task, dealing with competing priorities, assignment and homework planning, and motivation.

Studying, Taking Tests, and Learning from Mistakes

Topics: Effective studying for different test types, study aid development, strategies for effectively writing online / in-person tests, and post-test reflection and learning.

Faculty Guidebook

Licensing

This work will be licensed under an Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5 Canada (CC BY-NC-SA 2.5 CA) license. Educators will be able to “copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format” and “remix, transform, and build upon the material”.
