All Honours and General Geography and Environmental Studies Program Revisions:

Honours Environmental Studies (BA) Program Revisions:
The Honours Environmental Studies (BA) program consists of 20 full-credit (or equivalent), of which no more than six may be at the 100 level. A maximum of 10.5 credits may be in Geography, including those specified as follows:
Core courses (seven and one half credits):
GG100*, GL100*
GG251, GG254, GG258; either GG260 or GG270;
GG280*, GG290 (normally taken in Second Year); Third Year Field Camp (one week, no credit); one of GG351, GG360, GG361, GG368, GG369; either GG450* and one of GG398, GG451, GG493, GG494, or, GG451 and two of GG398, GG493, GG494
Elective Courses (minimum of five and one half credits and a maximum of nine and one half credits)
In addition to the courses taken above, the program must include at least two and one half Geography elective credits (of which at least one credit must be at the 300 or 400 level) and at least three and one half Environmental Studies credits chosen from the respective lists below:

Notes:

  1. For progression into Second Year, a minimum GP of 6.0 is required in each of GG100* and GL100*. For progression into Third Year, into Fourth Year and for graduation, the area of specialization for GPA purposes will consist of all Core and Elective courses taken towards the Honours Environmental Studies program.
  2. At least one half-credit must be taken from Division A, (refer to page 53 of the 1996-1998 Undergraduate Calendar.) (PY223 recommended).
  3. To count courses other than those in the Elective list above towards the Honours Environmental Studies program, written permission must be obtained from the Department prior to the commencement of such courses.
  4. Students are advised that many of the courses in the program, especially those in the Environmental Studies electives list, have prerequisites.

Honours Geography (BA) Program Revisions:
The Honours Geography program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent) and includes a minimum of 10.5 credits in Geography and a minimum of eight non-Geography credits. Not more than six full-credit courses (or equivalent) may be at the 100 level. The program must include at least one half-credit in Division A, (refer to page 53 of the 1996-1998 Undergraduate Calendar.)

Honours Geography (BA) in Combination with Another Honours Program:
The combined Honours Geography program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent). A minimum of eight credits in Geography is required and a maximum of 11 may be taken.
The program must include the following:
GG100* (taken in First Year); GG251, GG254, GG258, GG260, GG270, GG280*, GG290 (normally taken in the Second Year); one of GG351, GG360, GG361, GG368, GG369;
one half Geography elective credit at the 300 or 400 level.
One half-credit from two of the following three groups:

Third Year Field Camp (one week, no credit).
GG450*, or
one full-credit consisting of one half-credit in Geography at the 400 level (excluding GG451) and one half credit in Geography at the 300 or 400 level.

Honours Geography (BSc) Program Revisions:
The Honours Geography (BSc) program consists of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent) and includes a minimum of 10.5 credits in Geography and a maximum of eight non-Geography credits. Not more than six credits may be at the 100 level. The program must include at least one half-credit in Division A, (excluding Mathematics - refer to page 53 of the 1996-1998 Undergraduate Calendar.)
First Year:
GG100*, GL100*; MA101 and MA102 (recommended) or another credit in Mathematics (excluding MA130 and MA141); two of BI100*, CH100*, PC100*.
Second Year:
For progression into the Second Year of the program, the requirements include a minimum GP of 6.00 in each of GG100* and GL100*.

One non-Geography elective credit, including at least one half-credit in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics.
Third Year:
Three of:

Honours Geography with Environmental Science Option (BSc) Program Revisions:
The requirements are the same as stated for the Honours Geography (BSc) program with the following modifications:

  1. The senior courses in Geography must include at least one credit of 300 or 400 level Physical Geography.
  2. Electives must include at least one credit from: BI206, BI305, BI307*, BI310* (Environmental Toxicology), BI467*.
  3. Electives must include at least one full-credit from CH220*, CH234; either CH235 or CH236; CH320, CH322.

Honours Biology and Physical Geography (BSc) Program Revisions:
The Honours Biology and Physical Geography (BSc) program consists of a minimum of 20 full-credit courses (or equivalent), of which at most six may be at the 100 level. For progression into the second year of the program, a GP of at least 6.0 is required in each of BI100*, GG100* and GL100*; for progression into subsequent years, and for graduation, the cumulative GPA will be calculated on the Biology and Geography courses combined.
Required Courses:
BI100*; CH100*, CH200* or CH220*; GG100*, GL100*;
MA105, or both, MA101 and MA102; MA141 or MA240; GG251, GG254, and GG280*; one of GG260, GG270, GG290.
Three from Group 1 and two from Group 2:

Six senior Biology credits (Refer to Note 1)
One additional senior Geography credit (Refer to Note 1)
Notes:

  1. Either BI490* or GG450* must be completed. If BI490* is chosen, then GG480 and one of GG395, GG396, or an additional Group 1 course must be taken; if GG450* is selected then the senior Biology courses must include a 400 level credit.
  2. The Third Year Field Camp in Geography must be completed, but neither BI491 nor the Biology Illustration Workshops are available to students in this program.; however, Honours students are expected to attend all departmental seminars.
  3. Electives must include at least one half-credit from Division A, (excluding Mathematics; refer to page 53 of the 1996-1998 Undergraduate Calendar.)

MA 101 and MA102 have replaced the deleted course, MA100*. The half-credit course, MA141 has replaced the deleted course, MA140*.

General BSc Physical Geography Program Revisions:
The major, available only in the BSc program, must include:
GG100*, GL100* and at least four credits from:
GG230, GG233, GG283, GG336, GG379, GG380, GG381, GG382, GG383, GG384, GG385, GG336, GG388, GG389, GG395, GG396
and must include one credit from:
MA101, MA102, MA105, MA121, MA122, MA141.
Note: It is suggested that the student complete one of:
GG251, GG254, GG258, GG351, GG360, GG361, GG368.
MA 101 and MA102 have replaced the deleted course, MA100*. The half-credit course, MA141 has replaced the deleted course, MA140*.

Course Additions:

GG231 Risks and Disasters: A Geographical Introduction 0.5

The course examines the nature of danger and disasters, the scope of the human vulnerability and responses to them. It will look at risk and damaging events associated with extreme natural forces, technological accidents, epidemic diseases and human conflict.

GG280 Introduction to Physical Geography 1.0

This course systematically examines the major concepts of biogeography, climatology, geomorphology, and hydrology. (Physical Geography)

Prerequisite: GG100* or GL100*, and registration status: Departmental Honours programs.
Exclusion: GG230, GG281*.

GG283 Lab Techniques in Geography 0.5

This course focuses on laboratory techniques which enhance our ability to understand natural geomorphological and hydrological processes. (Physical Geography)

Prerequisite: GG100* or GL100*.
Exclusion: GG283*.

GG336 Coastal Processes and Landforms 0.5

The course provides students with a knowledge of the processes active in the coastal environment. Waves, tides and currents and their effects on the development of landforms on hard and soft coastlines will be the focus of study. (Physical Geography)

Prerequisite: GG230 or GG280*.

GG394 Geography of Tourism Marketing and Planning 0.5

This course examines tourist image and consumer spatial behaviour, analyzes public and private sector response strategies of market segmentation and the marketing "mix", and studies tourism planning and management in response to visitor demand but with an emphasis on resource sustainability.

Prerequisite: GG294.

GG398 Parks and Protected Areas 0.5

This course analyzes the origins, types and purposes of protected areas as part of integrated resource and environmental management.

Prerequisite: GG240 or GG290.

GG481 Seminar on Arctic Environments 0.5

This course examines periglacial, permafrost, hydrological and oceanographic processes active in the Arctic. (Physical Geography)

Prerequisite: GG280* and registration status: Third or Fourth Year Departmental Honours Programs.

GG482 Seminar on Mountain Environments 0.5

This course is an in-depth examination of the physical processes in mountain ecosystems. (Physical Geography)

Prerequisite: GG280* and registration status: Third or Fourth Year Departmental Honours Programs.

GG486 Seminar on Coastal Environments 0.5

This course is an in-depth examination of the physical processes in coastal ecosystems. (Physical Geography)

Prerequisite: GG280* and registration status: Third or Fourth Year Departmental Honours Programs.

GG230 Physical Environments 0.5

The study of the processes and relationships within the ecosphere through an empirical evaluation of energy and moisture circulation, materials availability, and the ecosystemic properties of world biomes. (Physical Geography)

GG233 Field Instrumentation in Geography 0.5

This field course concentrates on field instrumentation used in monitoring geomorphological and hydrological processes. (Physical Geography)††

Prerequisite: GG100* or GL100*.

GG291 Geography of Resource Policy and Administration 0.5

This course focuses on the processes of resource and environmental management within a complex, interacting system of governments, non-governmental organizations and private organizations and landowners.†

GG362 Agricultural Geography 0.5

This course examines the location and nature of agricultural activities in terms of environmental, cultural and market factors.

Prerequisite: GG210 or GG260.
Exclusion: GG312.

GG369 Geographical Information Systems I 0.5

An exploration of the basic principles and concepts of GIS including such topics as the components and operations of a typical GIS, the data contained in it, and applications of GIS in the management of land use, resources, transportation, and retailing.

Prerequisite: GG254.
Exclusion: GG319.

GG375 Rural Geography 0.5

This course examines the spatial patterns and changes over time in human features of rural areas with emphasis on Canadian rural space.

Prerequisite: GG220 or GG270.

GG379 Global Patterns of Erosion and Sedimentation 0.5

Estimates of global rates of erosion, storage of eroded materials in continental interiors, patterns of sediment movement, sedimentation rates in oceans, recycling of sediment. (Physical Geography)†

Prerequisite: GG230 or GG280*.

GG380 Physical Geography Field Project 0.5

A student-centred field project focusing on a topic consistent with faculty expertise. (Physical Geography)†

Prerequisite: GG280*, and either GG233 or GG283.

GG381 Hydrology 0.5

An overview of hydrological processes with emphasis on Canadian examples; the hydrological cycle; surface hydrology; groundwater hydrology; measurement techniques. (Physical Geography)†

GG382 Drainage Basin Ecosystems 0.5

This course examines the relationships of hydrology, geomorphology and climate within a drainage basin in order to understand the significant linkages among all three. (Physical Geography)†

GG383 Sediment Transport in Fluids 0.5

Threshold erosion of solid particles in air and water; individual and collective particle transport; primary sedimentary structures, bedforms and landforms, resulting from collective transport and deposition. (Physical Geography)†

GG384 Glacial Processes 0.5

The distribution and nature of snow and ice environments including: snow cover and snowmelt; the mechanics and hydrology of glaciers; glacial and nival erosion processes; depositional features and landforms; temporal fluctuations in snow and ice covers, their causes and consequences. (Physical Geography)†

Prerequisite: GG230 or GG280*.

GG385 Natural Environments 0.5

This course is an in-depth examination of geoecology, the distribution and geophysical characteristics of habitats: relation to energy, moisture and materials availability and circulations; ecosystemic properties of the major biomes; concept of the "natural regions''; background to the distribution of natural resources and hazards. (Physical Geography)

Prerequisite: GG230 or GG280*.
Exclusion: GG335.

GG386 Slope Processes 0.5

A survey of mass wasting processes, including rockslides and rockfalls, mudflows, solifluction, soil creep and avalanches, and an examination of their relations, mechanics, magnitude-frequency and roles in the development of slopes and specific land-forms. (Physical Geography)†

Prerequisite: GG230 or GG280*.

GG388 Topics in Meteorology 0.5

This course examines selected topics in meteorology. Content will reflect student interest. (Physical Geography)†

Prerequisite: GG230 or GG280*.

GG389 Climate Change 0.5

This course examines the natural and anthropogenic means by which climate changes. (Physical Geography)

Prerequisite: GG230 or GG280*.

GG395 The World's Problem Environments 0.5

An examination of pressing problems of environment deterioration resulting from the human impact in regions that appear especially sensitive to modern development. These regions can be characterized broadly by specific clima-geomorphic and biotic conditions. Current trends in the arid and humid tropics, high mountain regions, wetlands, coastal and ocean environments will be examined.

Prerequisite: One of GG230, GG231, GG240, GG280* or GG290.
Exclusion: GG345.

GG396 Natural Hazards 0.5

The nature and distribution of risk from geo-physical processes including floods, earthquakes, storms and droughts. Emphasis upon the incidence of damaging events and their relation to ecological setting, settlement patterns, land-use and contemporary socio-economic conditions.

Prerequisite: One of GG230, GG231 or GG280*.
Exclusion: GG346.

GG397 World Water Environment and Development Issues 0.5

The study of major geographic aspects of world fresh water supply and demand.†

Prerequisite: One of GG230, GG240, GG280*, GG290, GG291, GG292 or GG297.

GG480 Advanced Physical Geography 0.5

An examination of recent research concepts and methods of investigation in Physical Geography. (Physical Geography)†

Prerequisite: GG280* and registration status: Third or Fourth Year Departmental Honours Programs.

GG494 Northern Resources and Environments 0.5

An examination of northern ecosystems and environments in the context of resources management. The primary focus is Canada and Alaska.†

Prerequisite: GG290 and registration status: Third or Fourth Year Departmental Honours programs.
